I got the notice in the mail and took the car in last week. The dealer didn't even know about the recall or have the "replacement parts" so I'll have to return it in a few weeks. BMWNA should have taken care of that before sending out the recall letters.

Well, it says clearly in the notice that they don't have the parts available yet and that we will be contacted by BMW when the recall is rolled out.

Only in cases that the car is actually showing signs of malfunction should you take the car in.

Did you receive any letter from BMWNA and your car has been fixed yet?

Nope, still waiting for the actual 'make an appointment to come in so we can fix it' letter/notice/call/whatever.

I will probably give it another month or so and if I don't hear anything by then I will call my local BMW dealer (Crevier in Santa Ana) to see what's up.

I send them an email and here what they said:

Thank you for your reply regarding our voluntary recall announcement for certain 2010-2012 vehicles equipped with inline 6-cylinder engines. In very rare cases, the bolts on the VANOS (variable camshaft timing) unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break.

Affected Series include:

2010-12 1 Series
2010-12 3 Series
2010-2012 5 Series
2010-12 5 Series Gran Turismo
2012 6 Series
2010-2012 X3 SAV
2010-12 X5 SAV
2010-12 X6 SAV
2010-12 Z4

Drivers of potentially affected vehicles may continue to drive their vehicles; however, if a Check Engine or Service Engine Soon lamp illuminates and a Check Control message warning appears, they should immediately contact their nearest authorized BMW center to arrange service. In the event of stalling, drivers should carefully move away from traffic and pull over to a safe location as soon as possible and stop the vehicle. They should contact BMW Roadside Assistance at 1-800-332-4269 to have the vehicle brought to the nearest authorized BMW center. They should not continue to drive their vehicle.

Owners of potentially affected vehicles will be contacted by BMW Customer Relations via First-Class Mail to inform them of the recall and, when parts are available, will receive a second notification that will advise them to make an appointment with their authorized BMW center to have the repair made.

BMW remains committed to maintaining the highest level of automotive excellence. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience should your vehicle be affected by this recall.

The BMW Customer Relations and Services Department is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., ET. You can reach us at 1-800-831-1117.

Has anyone actually had this recall done at the dealer just by taking it in?

Dealers in the USA are currently receiving a special digital Stahlwille Torque wrench that measures not only torque but also torque angle, aswelll as a special bit with which to attach the new bolts.

The wrench alone is costing each dealer $990 and it has taken a long time to get enough stock of the item for all dealers worldwide.

It is not a tool dealers would usually use or keep on hand.

When all dealers have the tools and the new bolts are avialable BMW will start the recall

For those interested its a Stahlwille 713 3-60Nm digital torque wrench.

Yeah, and what am I supposed to do after receiving that nice letter? Don't drive the car? Or maybe drive it but only after asking myself "do you feel lucky today?" BMW failed at handling this recall. Sounds like it was a letter sent only for legal reason. If they cared about customers satisfaction, they should have fixed the problem, not just informed me about it.

The in my opinion nice letter informed me of an (to me) unknown issue with the engine in my particular vehicle and that my manufacturer is coming up with a solution and I will get a FREE fix once it is my turn to come in.

It says drive the car UNLESS there is an issue with it. If there is an issue now, bring it in so they will fix it now. If there is no issue wait your turn and we will call you to bring your car in. We are talking about tens of thousands of cars that need fixing.

If the engine fails because of this issue, BMWNA will need to fix it or replace it, which has happened to people, also in this forum.

And be happy we get this fix, from what I heard people in the UK for example do not get this free fix at all and there is no recall there.

So have some tea and relax.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I respect it but if your way of relaxing is drinking tea, well mine is driving hard the "ultimate machine" with a grin on my face and no thoughts of Vanos failures on the back of my mind. And therefore my relax is affected by BMW delays.

Lol, yeah i feel yah. I'm a little annoyed by this whole bolt thing too but I'm happy they will fix it for free even though I'm out of warranty.

And, I am a German, driving hard is in my genes.

Hahaha no doubt. I have been on the Autobhan many times and got ultimate proof of Germans' hard driving Plus I'm Italian and Ferrarista. Shumi showed us for 10 years what driving really is. I live in HB as well. We may catch up one day.

Thanks! That's good to know, I wonder when our US dealers will start taking cars. Let us know how it went and make a picture of the engine bay before you bring it in. I heard they cut pieces of trim to gain easier access to several parts.
