328xi opinions
i'm currently looking into purchasing a 2007 or 08 328xi coupe, i was just wondering if anyone could give me any feedback on how well they drive, and also i hear that they are slow, i was wondering if they really are slow, or just slow compared to things like m3's and how easy would it be to make one run 0-60 in under 6 seconds
and also, if someone could tell me exactly what come with the sport package on a 328xi that would be extremely helpful |

I'll start by saying this is community dominated by 335 drivers. Some consider their cars to be the best thing since sliced bread and will throw low-blows to the 328 and it's "lowly status". Keep that in mind when reading the responses here.
To answer your question directly: it's not slow, but it's not the beast that is the 335. A 328i with 6MT will do 0-60 in 6s flat, even slightly under depending on who you ask. I believe both C&D and Edmunds reviewed it at 5.9s. I think the car is significantly better with the 6MT - the AT seems to sap a bit of life out of the engine (and will probably cost you ~0.5s 0-60). You need to go drive one for yourself and do your homework first. Any review shows the 328 right around 6s, so start by reading up. Sport Package (ZSP) includes sport seats, sport steering wheel (slightly thicker than stock), upgraded wheels, and shadowline (black) trim around the windows. If you get a non-Xi, it also gives you the sport suspension. xDrive cars have their own unique suspension setup as it is, so opting for ZSP doesn't change anything. There are very few (read: pretty much zero) engine modifications for the NA engine. Air filter, intake, and exhaust are certainly do-able, but you won't be getting much more power from the car regardless of what you do. Remember, this is not a car built for straight line speed. The 3 Series is about as balanced as it gets with perfect weight distribution - the smooth power delivery and excellent chassis make the car a blast in the twisties. If you want raw horsepower and muscle, you might want to look elsewhere.

yea i thought that was no difference as far as suspension went, and yea i noticed when reading other posts everyone with 335's were hating on 328s, but i just simply can not afford one, but i live in new jersey and any car that isn't 4x4 or awd is pretty much worthless around here, and im not really looking for anything that will blow cars away in a straight line, as every road is a never ending S turn, but thanks for your help

155 if you have ZSP and performance tires. Chances are, any Xi cars around the Northeast will have all seasons. The only reason BMW limits it further than 155 is because of the tires.

thanks, yea i was palnning on putting al seasons anyway, i mean im not going to be able to get close to 130 around here so it doesn't really matter, (my friend has an 08 lancer and he can't even get that past 80 on our roads) most of them around here are between 25-30k for between 20-40k miles, so i don't know if those are really good deals or not, but there about the best i can find, i'll probably be stuck with getting an auto one because my mom may need to drive it sometimes because her civic is terrible in the snow and rain, but i just wanted to make sure that they're good quality, because i heard that after 05 they weren't as good, but as far as im concerned the whole certified used warranty is the greatest thing ever

I've owned a 325xi when I lived and CT and driven my mother's 328xi a few times as well. There isn't much for me to complain about, as the ride incredibly smooth, handles like a champ, and still gets compliments from strangers. As for speed and power, I've had very little problem pulling ahead of the majority of traffic when I needed it. Granted, more aggressive Mustang drivers can get the jump on you, BMW's inline-6 engine is no slouch.

because im only 18, so the only one i can afford is a 328xi, and maybe do a few mods to it, but i would rather have a nice looking car that handles well over a straight line car

If I was 18 I would buy something else IMO. Since your talking about CAI, power and mods get something else. Otherwise you will buy one and sell it down the road.

I have a 325xi and love it. It's not fast. It especially sucks in summer with the AC blasting and 2 or 3 other people in the car. But if you are alone most of the time, it is quite quick. I realized that 95% of people will not redline their car (something I enjoy doing every chance I get just to hear the engine sing). Even most people with 335s or V8's will not redline it. So I have no problem pulling ahead of just about everyone. The only people who always try to race me and pull ahead are high school kids in V6 camrys, accords, altimas. That's it.
But the car handles very well. I still have my jag x-type. And I know that an i with sports pack will handle better. But the xi still handles great with nice steering and road feel. Only thing that bugs me is the wheel gap. I love my car here in Chicago because its below freezing most of the winter, or its snowing, or there's black ice on some corners. And in spring, summer, fall it seems to rain all the time. So the 4-wheel traction has helped tremendously with pulling into traffic quickly. You will love the car. I didn't like the 328xi GM auto tranny. The ZF tranny in my 325xi is much much better (but not as good as the 335 one). But it is still a great car. |

If that's what you want, the 328 is a fantastic car. Go drive one and see what you think.

I wouldn't be so certain about your statement. RWD with snow tires in NJ would do fine 99% of the time. I live in MI and I have a 325i (RWD) with snow tires, it performs as good or better than most FWD and AWD cars with all season tires. Personally, I'd get snows even if you get the xi and get summer tires for the summer. Then you'd have the best of both worlds.

well to all the people who question my statement about none 4x4 cars being worthless, you guys dont live where i do, i live on a mountain, my mom has a civic that cant make it up the hill that connects my street to the main road if there is any snow at all, along with my dads ram 2500 unless 4x4 is activated, my current car (4x4 jeep) and my brothers awd avenger are the only cars that always work in the snow around here, and they can't plow by me as the road is to steep, thus making anything that is not awd or at least a slip engaged 4x4, worthless for me as i must commute to college and work

I would (did) only buy a 328i in manual transmission, much different car than the automatic transmission.

When I get out of my M6 and get into my 328xi 6-speed, it feels just fine. There's enough power to pull out onto dangerous roads and stuff and I never feel like I am driving something that needs more power to be safe or fun. The 335 guys just like to boast about all their power, just drive the 328 and see for yourself. And the Evo may be fast, but you have to look at it when it's parked in your driveway and they sure are not the prettiest things around.

I honestly don't know why people say the the 328xi is slow...I have an 07 e92 328xi and the power is just enough for me. If you need the car to accelerate faster off a red light or merging into oncoming traffic then maybe you shouldn't be merging into traffic at that time. I came from an 05 G35 coupe and yes, its not as beastly, but I was not disappointed when I made the switch. Good luck on your car hunting!

Why do you want an xi? My advice is to get a RWD 328i with 6MT and ZSP. I live in CT and own three RWD BMWs. Get a good set of snow tires and forget about all wheel drive. The so-called Sport Package on an xi has bigger wheels and sport seats, there's no suspension tuning. The xi's suspension and performance are inferior to RWD BMWs.
