Long trip...had to add a quart with Mobil 1. First time I've had to add oil in 49k miles.

I'm not sure this guy knows what he is talking about. The 10 in the oil number is the cold viscosity and the 60 is the hot viscosity. So, going for a 10w60 oil to a 10w40 for instance will both have the same cold start up viscosity. The only difference between the two is the 40 weight oil will be a tad thinner in the hot ranges than the 60 weight oil. Another note is the further the numbers are apart, ie 10w40 to 10w60, the oil becomes less stable in its operating temperatures.

This was true back when they added stuff to make the spread wider with non synthetic oils.

With modern synthetic oils, you can have a pretty wide viscosity spread before oil "stability" is affected. 10w60 is perfectly fine as is 0w40 with today's technology.

Good to know, thanks.

It has a lot to do with the viscosity index improver being used, and doesn't really have anything to do with the synthetic base oils being used.

Not arguing, just wanted to point that out.

You're both right. Higher quality basestocks have a naturally high VI, but VIIs are often used to supplement.

For multi grade oils, VIIs are always used. Not often. Always.

That's right, thank you for the correction.

2 years on the 0W40, all street driving, but for me that is only 16k miles and 3 oil changes. I change to 0W40 when I did the rod bearings as preventative maintenance in 2014. The oil temp may be slightly higher with the thinner oil, but not enough to concern me for my driving.

That rule makes life simple -- keep your car bone stock and put only dealer sold parts on it. It works for many people.

I've been running 50/50 mix of Mobil 1 0W40 and 15W50 and my last Blackstone was very clean after around 9,000 miles and a track day at around 7,500 miles, but I did have to add a quart after the drive to the track and before running at the truck.
They said it would have been fine for at least another 1,000 miles.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."
