Thanks for the ID of the plant, the Rocky Mountain Beeplant, AKA Stinking-clover. I took the shot a few days ago along the Phantom Canyon road the goes from Highway 50 east of Canon City and Cripple Creek.

Looks much better with the appropriate bee rather than the ants that decided to inhabit my effort.

I need a macro lens. That 180mm canon macro lens seems batshit crazy enough to work for me.

Been thinking the same thing. My issue with the 180mm is the reportedly slooooow AF. I'd be using it to grab pics of butterflies with the local group from our biology dept. Butterflies rarely sit still long enough to wait for a lens to focus. I'm thinking now the 100mm L macro might work better and be more versatile. Plus it has IS where the 180 does not.

I like my 70-200mm f/4L IS for its flexible focal length and short focus distance, particularly with a 25mm ET. I've also got a close up diopter filters that I can add also. The ole 500mm is fantastic, but a bear to use sometimes.

I was out with my 70-200 f/2.8 IS last outing and wasn't real happy with it as a closeup lens. I didn't use any ETs, but my 400 5.6 did a better job of locking onto insects than the 70-200 did. It's just with the 400 I had to be way back.

I've wanted a macro for some time now, so I think the 100 f/2.8L is in my future.

I'm sure you will be happy with it. I have the non L version, and even that is a fantastic lens.

We were just talking about not having a long enough lens on hand...Well I had my 400, but this hawk was just a tad too far away still...This was taken from Hawk Hill in the Golden Gate National Rec Area, just at the north tip of the golden gate.

I've used the close up lens attachment for my 70-200 when i didn't want to carry an extra lens and it's pretty good. Helps in a pinch for closer focus. I now carry it with me on engagement shoots to get small details and ring shots if I need to pack light (usually). I think there was a gallery where someone had the 70-200 f/4 (non is) and the close up lens with some pretty nice dragonfly photos.

^^^Nice one druu

After a couple of hours waiting yesterday I finally had a hawk fly near enough to get a couple of decent shots. Notice the band on this one's leg, indicating someone is following his movements.

^^^^Cool shot, Ed.

We were at a tour of Whiteside Gardens today. This amazing 5 acre spread is owned by a retired professor of biology from the local university and is a plant and insect lover's dream. Thousand of different plants and trees from around the world and a serious variety of butterflies, moths, mantises, and birds. Here's a mantis chowing down on a moth. Wifey saw this moth that appeared to be stuck on a leaf until we realized the leaf was a mantis. The mantis must have nailed this moth right as we walked up because it was still putting up a mighty struggle. This was shot with my 70-200, but I really wish I had macro. I almost bought one last night and backed out. Alas...

My apologies for the lack of artistic content, but I thought this old grain elevator in Hilger, Montana was an interesting structure.

This took some work in post. The pink was badly blown. Had to reduce red and blue channels as well as saturation. But it didn't lose too much detail.

A brief break in the rain providing a short opportunity...and then it poured again.
