You guys are introducing way too many additional variables...if you take the comparison at face value it's a pretty good comparison

For 25k which car would a potential buyer looking for a fun car purchase?

Just a not-surprising-given-the-crowd observation: Many people here listing "what other people would think" as their reason for picking the BMW.

I haven't driven the Fiesta but I find it hard to believe it has better steering feel than my M3 ZCP.

I'm not buying that...

It isn't all that fair to compare a used car with a new one at the same price. The new car has a warranty and can be leased. If something goes wrong with the M3 it is going to be expensive to fix. I suppose having a manual transmission at least eliminates a five figure transmission exchange.

You might have shite Fords in the States. I can assure you there's nothing wrong with the ones sold in Europe, that's why you're now getting what we've had for years here while you've been sold the dregs of the range, strange as its an American company!

Maybe it's what customers over there like, who knows :-/

Isn't this the age old question though??? New car with a warranty and good gas mileage and piece of mind that ntohings gonna break etc....

Or older car that I can mod the shit out of and kick ass with...

At the end of the day kinda boils down to your needs vs. wants right? and everyone's different.

One things for sure the Fiesta aint no BMW... but that doesn't mean its a heap of shit... its a nice, and capable car. just in a different class is all.

Nothing against Ford Fiesta, but first thing anyone notices about a car is its "looks" and no way would I even consider driving a Fiesta over the classic E46 M3-that looks like a DTM car with its flared fenders and what not.. and who knows maybe the Fiesta does deliver a fun driving experience/performance but not into its styling at all. No comparison at all here for me.

The fiesta will lose a hell of a lot more money in the first 12 months.

I'm sure the fiesta is fun but it's a Ford that uses its brakes to reduce understeer and fades after a hard lap (well that's my understanding of the bigger brother Focus ST).

M3 no contest

Some of the responses in this thread make me embarrassed to be a BMW driver. I only drive an M3 because I felt it was the best car for my needs. It's the snobs and fanbois like some of those in this thread that give us other owners a bad rep

A few things haven't been mentioned:

1. The BMW has 74k miles on it.
2. The BMW is not stock (coilovers and square wheel/tire setup)
3. The Fiesta ST is VERY well tuned and is quite fun to drive.

With respect to the handling and steering comments: The fiesta ST steers very well, and while a stock, new M3 does as well, all it takes is some FLCAB or RTAB wear or being out of alignment to throw that out the window. MF makes it a point to comment along these lines.

The increased scrub radius of wider front tires will also hurt steering feel, and while the overall handling capability MIGHT be better with the coil-overs, it's very likely that steering effort build and response linearity is actually worse.

This is simply one face of the typical "here's my budget, what should I buy" debate.

I'm a test driver in the auto industry, and I'm willing to bet that most professional evaluators would agree with Matt Farah's conclusion given these two cars.

what a strange comparison, pricewise yes but car wise? a little shit ford that has no looks/performance/comfort/style/image...did i miss anything that a car should have besides 4 wheels and seats to an icon of looks and performance...i would take e36 m3 without wheels over this ford

He forgot a couple of things to mention as well:

1. A hot chick wouldn't be caught dead in a Fiesta...can you imagine showing up to valet in a bright red Fiesta? FYL.

2. That Fiesta might have cost $22,000 new, but in 6 months its probably worth $14,000. That M3 will be worth $20k still in 6 months.

3. Sure maintenance is an issue...E46 M3s are pretty pricey to keep running. But considering you are comparing it to a vehicle who's company should have gone out of business 5 years ago? Ford must be making quality products...*cough*

Tell this fat Seth Rogan wannabe to drive that piece of sh!t off a cliff...that way we won't have to see his next video comparing a 2008 M3 coupe to a Dodge Dart SRT...
Damn you sound hurt. But its okay

This is certainly an interesting comparison. It is based on the value of the vehicle. Don't look at the brand. They are two different cars. One is turbocharged the other NA. There are certainly big differences. Being a complete car lover regardless of the brand I think here in the US we as a brand have definitely lost out on a ton of great cars that are sold in Europe.

Specifically all these hot hatches and wagons. Now again this comparison is against a coupe a four door hatch. Honestly, good for Ford to deliver and develop a car that apparently has the handling and fun characteristics as such a crowned car as the E46.

I have always been a German car owner. There are lots of brands in Europe that I would love to own, but some are perhaps out of my price range. With that being said, if ford, Chevy, Cadillac (now with CTS and ATS-V models) it's nice to see this. However, if we were to get some of the wagons and hatches sold in Europe and out view as a brand, which has been reduced to sedan, coupe, TRUCK, Big SUV or EVEN BIGGER SUV.

Driving behaviors, lifestyles, roads, cities, etc are far different in Europe than they are in US. Bigger isn't always better.

Personally, I own two M vehicles right now (E90 M3 which I have owned day one since 2010 and an X5M). I bought these two cars by going through tons of driving, reading, etc. If I felt there were other cars that gave me all the tangibles and intangibles here in the US then I would of went with one of them. Personally, I would much rather have an E91 M3 wagon or an RS4 or RS6. Hey if chevy built a wagon with the LS3 427 (yes i know caddie has the wagon but the design and right angles are horrible) i would drive that in a heart beat. If it matched the looks, handling, interior feel that German brothers make day in and day out. But, we (the US) have basically told manufacturers that we don't want those vehicles.

Look at the Renault Megane. That thing is awesome and would love to have. But not for the US.

It's too bad. This is an example, that someone who may not be an M3 sort of person, can have just as much fun that's what it's all about.

It's a great time to be a car enthusiast. Just depends on where you live how many options you have at your disposal.

How can one compare a brand new car to a "now-collectable" / one of the best BMWs ever made car?

Think of it this way - The E9X M3 is similar to the Ferrari F355 in terms of overall performance and likely outperforms it in many ways. Don't you think F355 owners would have the same reaction when they test the two head to head with one being a decade older? It's the same concept.
Exactly! A car's place in history is tied to the moment in time it was introduced. The best exotics of 20 years ago are now being matched or beaten in many areas of performance by much "lesser" cars. What does this prove? Not much. A 1995 Ferrari 355 accelerated 0 - 60 in 4.5s. A 2008 Audi R8, 13 years later achieves similar performance. To me, this only proves just how ahead Ferrari was 13 years ago!

The F355 was the first road car in the WORLD to have a clutchless sequential (F1) gearbox. Others introduced this a decade later! Is it fair (or meaningful) to compare the two? Not likely. The F355 will go down in the history books as bleeding edge in numerous areas, including a 5 valve per cylinder V8 and completely aerodynamic underbody. Other cars that can match its performance today may just be "nice cars" but not historically significant now or EVER.

The BMW M cars, including the e46 M3, have always brought something groundbreaking to the table. The e46 M3 brought super high ratios of HP to displacement for the time, along with plenty of other new tech... I don't think anyone will be having a conversation similar to the F355 or e46 M3 in 15 more years regarding the Fiesta ST!

Any true enthusiast is going to take an e46 M3 over a Fiesta.

Man, an awful lot of the people here are fanbois who care about image. I guess that goes along with the general theme on this forum (and BMW forums only) of guys talking about using their cars to get ass. Pathetic, really.

Ford makes fantastic cars today, I'd wager that the inside of a Focus Titanium is nicer than the inside of an F30.

People are indeed missing the point of the video. If you have $25k to spend, both of these are within reach, and therefore it's not a bad idea to cross-shop, if only fleetingly.
