More leg room in BMW coupes than competing sedans

I often end up in the backseat of my friends' chevy volt for the 45 minute commute to work and boy I cramped (right this second actually), I'm also barely clearing the ceiling. I'm 6"2 and the person in front is about 5"10. Now, Monday I was in the backseat of a 228i and the passenger was about the same height but I had enough leg room to be comfortable. Same thing in my M4, I had people in the backseat maybe 5 times so far and they were all comfortable. What's also funny is that I saw a video comparing the cla AMG to the m235i and the reviewers said the 2 had noticeably more leg room what's up with that? :

All BMW's have gotten large. Just try to get in the back of an E36 M3 sedan.

Even at 6'2" myself, I miss the smaller size of the older cars. An E46 sized sedan (or better, wagon) would be perfect for my needs.

But in terms of backseat space? All cars are getting bigger but at least BMW is making the cabin space bigger a cla is 11 inches longer than a MB 190e(my first car) but it does not seem to have 11 more inches of cabin space/ leg room

Some of it is also smart packaging. Our 1er had much thinner seats than a friends S5. Even though the Audi had more space inside, it was actually easier to get comfortable in the 1er.

I've been shopping cars recently and it's amazing how much more functional space German cars have than Japanese. It's rare to be able to move the seat far enough back in many Japanese cars just to fit my height, much less tall folks, but most German cars have plenty of adjustability.

I had a colleague from Germany drive my old Z3 M Coupe and he was 6'8". It wasn't exactly comfortable, but he still fit.

Everybody always complains about the lack of legroom in the back of my X1. Even behind me there's not a lot of room and I'm 5'6".

Some of it will be the angle of the backrest in front of you, but certainly for the Volt there's a lot of batteries under the rear seats and in the transmission tunnel which won't be helping. I think they used the same platform as for the European Astra which is about the size of a 1 series so it's a smaller car than the M4, but fairly comparable to the 225i.

The CLA is a cluster, it's the same size as a 3 series sedan with an unusable back seat unless you were in The Wizard of Oz.
