Birthstory of the BMW 3 Series Touring: a Family Man, $13,000, and a Wrecked E30
BIMMERPOST NEWS Birthstory of the BMW 3 Series Touring: a Family Man, $13,000, and a Wrecked E30 Did you know that the BMW 3 Series Touring had its origins in a wrecked E30 3 Series sedan? BMW engineer Max Reisböck created what became the prototype for the first 3 Series Touring based off his desire for a larger and roomier car, by way of a $13,000 budget, a friend's garage, and a wrecked E30 sedan. The video below tells the story - The story about the invention of the BMW 3 Series Touring and the beginning of the lifestyle touring. Engineer Max Reisböck wanted to go on vacation with his family, but in the mid 80's regular BMW's were too small for his luggage. That's why he invented the BMW Touring out of a wrecked 3 Series Sedan. Finally, the board of BMW took over his idea. |

Hah, now how random was that? A man just wanted to stuff more crap into his car to go on vacation and couldn't and just so happened to work for BMW. BAM! 3-series Wagon. Thanks for posting this vid, I love stuff like this.

Great, post. Definitely understand the inventor's mindset with a new addition of my own. Plus, compliments to BMW to having the openness to listen to employee suggestions.

I love that car. My favorite is the 2002 touring, many people, even bmw enthusiasts have never seen one. I wish bmw could still make things like these (brand new) for special orders. Considering all of the markets they're dealving into, they could really cash in on remaking oldie goodies. If i could get a brand new 2002 touring with 0 miles on i would pay an arm and a leg....

A man who turned the pretty shape of a sedan 3-series into an ugly touring model. I hate tourings and it's the reason why I shifted from a 3-series owner to another category, Z4 or 6-series which are way more unique, turn heads, and fun to drive.
