Question Ambit Energy

Someone's trying to tell me how great this is. Anybody know the real scoop?

Quick search says it's some kind of multi-level marketing bs. Whoever is telling you about it is probably selling the crap.

They are fine to use as your energy company. You don't have to get involved in the multi-level marketing if you don't want to.

Most people are overpaying for residential electricity service. It's all coming from the same place, over the same lines. Ambit or any other REP is just your billing company. Very little they can do to "screw" you and you can always turn to the PUC if needed.

I went with one of these third-party providers and after the first year my bill went through the roof. They said I was "floating" and current rates were 0.21 but I was also floating with my state supplier and it never went above 0.09. Fucking SCAM to the Nth degree. DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH THESE COMPANIES.

This can happen, but it's easily avoided if you stick with "FIXED" rate plans. This stuff is all standardized and highly regulated. Any shadiness is turned over to the Public Utility Commission and you're safe. Sign up on fixed rate plans for 6 or 12 month terms and just watch your bill. There are documents called Electricity Facts Label (EFL) and Terms of Service (TOSA) that must outline the terms of the plan in a consistent and standardized manner.

Ambit is a legit, reputable company but their rates can be confusing if you're not doing your homework. They don't intend to screw you, but have plans, like any company, that are variable.

No thanks. Even their shortest fixed rate plan is 2c more than my utility co.
