Hotel in SF...

I am spending a couple of nights in San Fran in December so looking for a hotel in the Union Square area. Any guidance from Bay area members is appreciated! Not looking for the Presidential suite but clean and well located are what I'm looking for. I tend to like smaller hotels rather the Marriotts of the world...

There is a JW Marriott just around the corner from where I need to be but I also see smaller hotels like the Andrews or Donatello... All suggestions are appreciated.

I lived in Nob Hill for a year before moving to Palo Alto. You may want to reconsider staying RIGHT in Union Square, depending on your tolerance for noise and crackheads.

When visiting us, my family stayed at The Mayflower and had good things to say. Affordable.

A few years ago, before we moved to California, we stayed at Hotel Vertigo while visiting SF and had a good experience:

Thank you! Haven't stayed in SF in years and never near Union Square. Sounds like I should stay away from the actual Union Square area...

I go to SF every couple of months for work and stay at the Parc 55 Wyndham in Union Square.

Orchard Garden is a couple blocks away, easy walk minimizes noise and bum traffic. Right across the street for entrance to China town, Le Central bistro and a nice coffee shop. There's also the Triton in same area both boutique style hotels smaller and somewhat modern. If you need to be in Union Square I'd suggest a chain like the Westin St. Francis or Francis Drake, they'll keep the bum contact to a minimum until you leave their block but will be pricey unless you have a hookup.

The Taj there is nice as well, but you're a block down from all the bums.

Yea - Union square is pretty much on the brink of the Tenderloin. While there are nice hotels and shopping districts around the area, be weary as there are also crackheads, drug dealers, zombies, and prostitutes frequenting these streets at night.

The first time I visited SF I ended up in a very nice time-share condo we rented on Sutter St (close to Union Sq.) and at night all the zombies came out to play.

I hear very good things about the Fairmont which is closer to Nob Hill. Much nicer area less bum traffic.

If you're military or prior service...I recommend staying at the Marines Memorial. That's where I always go.
