Wow. Just wow. LOL

I wear a tie 6 days a week so one of my main criteria is durability. That means the fabric as well as the shape of the tie needs to hold up over time.

I own about 100 ties at the moment and generally cull around 25 a year and buy new ones.
Zegna- Fabric is great, durability lacks

Robert Talbott- One of my favorite brands. Great brand all around in my experience
Ike Behar- Another one of my favorites. Good all around. Not necessarily great, but they don't lack in any category

Charles Tyrwhitt- They're a good cheap consideration, but I prefer their dress shirts much more than their ties. Around 2013 they began constructing their ties with thick padding which isn't my personal favorite.

John Nordstrom- Be careful that you don't buy just the "Nordstrom" brand as those are crap. The John Nordstrom ties I have were made by Napoli. I'm not sure if they're still made by them but the ones I have are a great value.

Fashion brands:

Burberry- probably one of the best fashion brands, but I only own one. Mine is constructed well and has held up over the past couple years

Versace- Crap. It's a $20 tie with a name that allows for a $200 mark-up. I own one
only because it was heavily discounted

Hugo Boss- Some of them are okay (I'm wearing one right now), but they offer nothing special. Like their suits, you get an average quality product with a modern cut/design, but pay a significant premium.

Ben Sherman- crap
Brooks Brothers- overpriced
Brooks Brothers (Outlet)- complete crap
Armani- the one I have is well made, but I'd never pay full retail
Hart Schaffner- Crap
99% of the stuff you buy at Dillards- Crap

i just bought 2 new suits from off fifth for my nieces wedding in June. One is light grey and dark grey, but I still need shoes , shirt and a tie. I haven't been to a party since 2010. This post might qualify for the "you know you're old" thread.

I forgot to recommend Isaia / Isaia Napoli ties. For menswear you guys who wear suits and coats/jackets each day should check out Cuccinelli. Steer clear of the "fashion" houses and go for those that specialize in menswear. The name will be less common but the quality will be where it should be.

Is there someplace I can shop for a suit that doesn't look like it shrunk in the wash?

Not the $5k Cuccinelli wants. I don't really have a budget per se. Last sport coat I bought was a Harris Tweed in the UK that was about $450 or so. Maybe $1000 for a suit. Certainly no more. Can't be seen wearing a $5k suit at a small midwestern university.

I bought 2 suits at Saks "OFF" fifth for under $900. buy one get one free. It's Saks branded but made by Zegna. The last suit I bought was back in 2006 from Sisley by Benneton. So It's been a while.

You might want to think about Made to Measure or even Made to Order from a quality tailor. Those can be had for well within your price range.

Like @kevinbahnz said above, I actually have a Saks house brand suit that I quite like which was made with Zegna Tessuto (Cloth from Zegna).

I have to say also that Armani Collezioni makes a quality suit with a good, relaxed drape. You won't have to worry about high waters and arms that expose 10" above your shirt cuff

As long as I can find "old school" suits that fit right and don't make me look like the guy I posted above.

I like that Saks Off 5th place. I was poking around there yesterday and saw quite a few reasonably priced things. Shirts and ties and so on. Need to spend some $$$ there soon.

Like the discusión. But I'm curious... What kind of shoes do you all where? There's a lil thread dedicated to 'kicks'. Feel free to share.
I have suits, plenty of slacks and shirts but nothing sets your look off better than what's on your feet! And believe me when I say... What's on your feet gets as much attention as what's on your torso.

^^Comfy is key. My area of responsibility covers 11 departments in 7 buildings on campus. My shoes have to be comfy enough for lots of walking and standing.

I just realized I have a couple Oscar de la Renta ties. Might be worth something now that he recently passed.

Women, in my experience, pay a lot more attention to $500 shoes on your feet than a $10k watch on your wrist. I wear mostly Ferragamo and Gucci with an occasional Bruno Magli or Santoni mixed in. Avoid leather bottoms now that I'm getting older and they hurt my back towards the end of the day.

Gucci makes an all rubber horsebit loafer. They're weatherproof and insanely comfortable, priced right around $250. You can wear them with literally anything, jeans to a suit, and they look great. I wore a pair all over Spain for 3 straight 20 hour days walking on cobblestone streets and my feet still felt great. Highly recommend checking them out.
