The cost of replacing engines under warranty because of infrequent oil changes has exceeded the money saved by offering complementary 15,000 mile oil changes for newly purchased cars paid for by BMW.

A complete wild guess on my part, but there's no chance I'd ever go even 10K on an oil change.

Should apply to the N55 in general at least since that is still used. This is my opinion.

I'm sure a reason they're not doing this for prior years is that they would get more complaints and bad PR from the owners. Most people won't know if they don't make changes but if all of a sudden you get told you need an earlier oil change, the natural question is well what about those other services? Were they a screwup? Are you going to compensate me? Keeping the consumer ignorant benefits them.

Very interesting that BMW has "changed" their minds on the OCI.

I think what this really means is that for all of us who have been changing their oil at 5K mile intervals... we have probably been doing it RIGHT all along - for long term engine life health.

IMO 10K is still too long to go on an oil change. 5K miles is best.

Guys - think the real reason why the same engine in an older(built) cars(built prior to July 2013) has a different OCI is bc BMW does not want to re-calibrate every car's instrument panel's SW level.

Now... IF bmw could just bring back the oil dip stick I would be a happy camper.

Interesting article in which I agree but with my driving style my oil changes usually happen between 9-10k anyways.

Wow, so the spark plugs last 60k miles before being changed for all the cars including the M5 and M6?

Based on what my tech buddy says, the viscosity of the oil is usually ok, it's just the volume of oil that is the issue. Our cars drink oil a lot, especially if the break-in period is not done correctly. He sees many cars coming in quarts low...his words

Screw all that. I change once a year regardless of mileage. It usually averages to about 3K miles per year because I have more than one vehicle but still. I'd cringe for changing at 10K

I would like to take this opportunity to tell every one who posted "So you think you know better than BMW" in reply to oil change intervals being too long to suck it.

Since the N55 is nearing end of life, BMW could have excluded it from the 10k oil change and not pissed off former owners of that engine. Alternatively, they could have grandfathered in N55 owners by policy, not updated their CBS firmware and hoped most wouldn't show up.

What's weird to me is the extra automatic transmission oil changes for the Active Hybrid models. Aren't they running the same gearbox as the other cars in the same series? Should the automatic transmission get the same oil change interval across the board?

I split the oil change interval of 10k with a filter change at 5k. This was due to the lifters getting replaced due to "dirty oil " clogging the pin hole. I also check the level more often than not, but I usually can tell the oil is low by sound before the BC stalk tells me it's a 1/4 quart low. (I have a 2007 , no nav.)
