DCT Clutch Smell - Winter temps

Hey guys,

Just dropped my girlfriend off.

When I was warming up my car for about 30-60 seconds, I drove off and didn't exceed 3 k rpm. My DCT is rather choppy and I have it in D mode with the most aggressive setting. This might explain the choppiness. I turn on the heat on low and continue to drive. I noticed a very faint clutch type of a smell. Do you guys have this happen to you? This wasn't the first time. I noticed it some other times and didn't think much of it.

Haven't smelled anything during normal conditions. Did have a distinct smell on my previous car (E60 550i) during Winter but this turned out to be my winter studs throwing dirt on the muffler.
Have studsfree tires on the M3 so again no smell. However might be worth checking in your case to see whether it actually is the gear box smelling.

Good luck.

Ps. Personally wouldn't use D5 from start/before warmed up as this mode obviously force the RPM to stay fairly high, but that's a different subject all together...

Is it clutch youre smelling or possibly trans fluid burning off the exhaust? These DCTs have a known issue with the plastic trans pans leaking. Could be residual on the exhaust burning off as the car warms up. SSP billet trans pan takes care of the leaking pan issue.

Hmmm should I bring it to the dealer to check if there's a leak? or any way to check for a leak myself?

Good point from SJL. I should know since I'm in the middle of DCT gasket leak fix. Yep, possible to check if you have a lift. No need to remove the DCT cover but you need to take a close look preferably using a flash lamp.

Cheers
