Well that's a pretty nice line up and I could see the value for some.

At the same type... all the POSERs that use to put "M" sticker on their 328, 535, etc... are now going to be back and in style.

I guess in some sense the value of the "M" tag on an actual "M" just went down.

Yes, Yes... I know, I know all the superfans out there are going to say no no, the quad pipes, the side vents, etc...

But I'm sure most will get it...

X6///M50d. i'm speechless. and not in a good way. whoever is in charge of branding and marketing at BMW right now should do the honorable thing and perform seppuku.

I may be a little optimistic, the way I see it:
By creating the M performance models, BMW M will have room to make the pure M models more focused and hardcore
Up to now the M cars had to play a dual role, now that this gap (M Performance) has been filled M will move further into the hardcore, focused territory!
Anyway my 2c- hope I am right!!!

The prices posted are in Euro, so probably will start around 65K in US. My US spec M3 in Germany is 96K Euro and I paid $65K brand new.

I agree with you..however the writing might be on the wall as the e9x was not treated to a CSL version, even though it is "softer" than the e46.

Clearly the focus is on marketing and revenue with this line, DTM is just around the corner.

None of these models will come to the North American markets.

I understand where a lot of people are coming from about the "M Dillusion," but isn't it diluted already? What would you call the logos on the M wheels and steering wheels, plus the M-Sport package. This is a big step for M GMBH and I think one in the right direction. Of making a lot of money that is. Diesel sells 80%+ Euro land, end of story.

Also, fast, diesel, awd wagons= major win.

Argh... I'm quite mad about this M badge thing on a non M car even though I'm not driving an M car.

I'm praying you're correct too. 'cuz that's the only way M division can justify themselves with all this bs M badge.

I'm sure there are people at ///M headquarters who are shaking their heads, like a lot of us are with what is a dilution of the M brand. IMO, it's all about share in the auto business and BMW is making a move to ensure long-term success. A couple things could be happening:

Secure and expand 'premium sport labelling' marketshare
Merc.,Audi etc. are all seeing success in selling volume through 'premium sport labeling' from their ultra-performance line, BMW has to make a similar move to insure keeping that market share long term. To points made here, almost everyone aspires to own a "M" car. BMW is simply providing access w/ a bit of price premium and making sure it's "tasteful"/meaningful in the spirit of M performance. You could say BMW performance is supposed to be that, but it simply doesn't mean the same thing and isn't enough of an equitable brand to the masses to appreciate it would seem.

Real M automobiles to become more premium (level up)
The good news is, that real M automobiles might have to be pushed up a couple levels in performance and finish. Unfortunately, that also dictates a larger price premium (e.g. Audi S vs. Audi RS), resulting in increasing the exclusivity of M cars. At the end, BMW comes full circle in keeping the real M cars exclusive and for the niche performance market they may have intended in the 80s with E30 M3.

Let's hope BMW isn't simply slapping that M everywhere and has a plan to elevate the real M cars to a distinct performance pedestal that we've all come to know and love.

It begs the question, why is the 335d so "inefficient" compared to these engines? The UK 335d is listed at 42 mpg UK combined. The UK mpg cycle must be very generous. The US mpg of 27 converted to UK mpg is only 32, not even close to the state value of 42 mpg UK.

The 335d engine is 5 years old isn't it? Plus it has one less turbo?

From the outside: like a Diesel, a bit deeper than a 535d though due ot the different exhaust.
From the inside: not that much like a Diesel. They make use of Active Sound Design a lot here. Bbut you will always know from the interior sound that it's a Diesel - on purpose by the way.
So the ASD is not as strong / not as much faking as in the new Audi A6 3.0tdi (don't know if americans know that car).
