An ancient tire balance question.....

After a bunch of VW Beetles, I did my homework in the carzines and bought an Opel Rallye from a local dealer. I put radial tires on it; the dealer did the work, and there was a shimmy that he could never cure. It persisted the whole time that I had the car.
I sort of went back to Bugs in the form of a SuperBeetle, which had McPherson struts rather than the dual trailing arms of the original, and it had balance problems that resisted all efforts to fix them.
I've long wondered if anyone else back then had shimmies that could not be fixed; I had the tires balanced both on and off the cars, to no good purpose.
Were the McPherson struts part of the problem?
What says the group?

If you never tried a known good wheel & tire from another vehicle then you skipped a step.

There was a finite limit to what was available to me for comparison. What was so strange was that I had endless balance problems back then, and have not (knock wood) had any since.
Nothing like a shimmy to take the pleasure out of driving.

How did you have them balanced?

Hunter GSP9700 Road forced?

Or just a general balance?

If it's the tires, Hunter will find it and provided somebody who knows what they are doing is at the machine, will fix it...

I tried whatever I could find at the time; everything from a bubble balance to on-the-car balancing; none of it did any good. After this period of time, I no longer recall specific names, tho' 'road force' sounds familiar and I believe I tried it.
I had had no problems on my older Bugs nor on other cars in the later seventies/early eighties.

The internet did not exist when these cars were originally on the market, therefore it is not possible to get an answer to your questions.
