The current MDrive requires IDrive. Speculation (I believe it is still that?) is that this one no longer does. It's the only thing that really makes sense, if you think about it, since IDrive is not standard so you can't make MDrive standard without either making IDrive standard or decoupling the two. Adding credence to the latter, the M3 GTS has (or seems to have - I haven't seen it officially confirmed, but it does have MDM for example) a non-IDrive dependent MDrive. So the software for the BC (the computer in the guage cluster) must already exist.

The question is, will people like you and me without Tech package be able to retrofit or get a software upgrade to have MDM?, now that its standard.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to determine in the other thread (why didn't they get merged?). Technic mentioned VOD, but in theory a third party could by-pass that issue. The real issue as I see it is that we don't have an M button. So, the question is, can the function of either the "Change Audio Source" button or the "Change Air Recirc Mode" button be remmapped to provide MDrive functionality. And more specifically, would the software provide this remapping or are we talking about rewiring or worse.

This MAY seem like a foolish with the new September build 2011s MDrive is standard- doesn't this mean MDM is standard as well?

Yes. Sport Plus "Power" and Sport Servotronic settings should also now be standard as well.

Disclaimer: I make this claim not because I have genuine first hand knowledge, but because I cannot think of how these things would then be optioned otherwise. They are not part of the new Convenience Package nor either Premium Package. So, if not standard, they would have to be a stand-alone option or part of some other new package. And I honestly cannot imagine they'd do that.

Another Note: Almost surely, all three of these modes will still be MDrive-only settings and not available as key-dependent settings nor via the buttons on the console. In other words, you'll still have to configure them via MDrive and use the M Button to activate them.

Well, thinking on it more, I suppose the could make the additional MDrive settings available only with ZCP, but I have to think that would have been mentioned in the PDF.

As an aside, now that ZTP is gone, EDC will only be available standalone or via ZCP. So, if you decide to forgo ZCP, you'll have to spec EDC stand-alone.

The results of all this change, I predict, are that post 2011.5 there will be a lot more single-hump + ZCP cars ordered.

So I have a Z4iS on order (for the last 4 months), my pick up date is 9/20 and I know the plant is closed during August. I'm wondering when the heck the car is going to go into production.., could this change have something to do with the delay?

I know I should be over in Zpost asking this but nobody is talking about it over there. (oops.. they are now)

M1 is coming, will be faster than M3 and M3 does not get any power bump? It could at least get leather/alcantara upholstery, M3 GTS brakes, suspension and exhaust, leave alone crankshaft (4.4l).

Beginning with September production there will be enhancements for BMW Assist with Bluetooth (639) and iPod/USB Adapter (6FL). These enhancements will extend the functionality through improved integration of mobile devices into the vehicle. These new features are made possible by hardware advances and are not “retrofittable” to pre-September builds.

Still don't get why they insist on doing this. People will pay and won't just dump their car to get this feature if that is the sales ploy they are attempting to use.

+1. I think anyone ordering a Germany-built BMW should be okay since I don't think any orders placed now will be done before the factory closes at the end of July. Perhaps wait a week or two to make sure it's too late for July production. Then you'll end up with a September build.

That is, assuming this applies to all September build cars, including those that were ordered earlier? Anyone wish to chime in?

Also, I can assume these features will be worldwide right, not just the US? We have USB/iPod and Bluetooth standard in Canada. Would I be safe to assume we will get these updates on 09/2010 builds?

New Seats

I'd love to see a picture of the new bi-color seats. Black with red inserts sounds intriguing....
To bad new exterior colors are limited to a new white....I'd like to see some more variety

My concern now is the price difference of the ZCV compared to the current tech package. I don't want the alarm nor the park distance control, but I do want the USB interface. I would also like to see what the bi-color leather looks like, and if that cost any extra. Finally, I'd like to know how much money I save by getting manual seats, as I much prefer them.

Was just about to order a 335xi and don't know what to do now. So, correct me if I'm wrong, but from reading this it appears the new iPod out feature that was talked about in the youtube video that was posted will only be available on these September builds? It may sound trivial to some, but I was really looking foward to this feature, especially the ability to listen to genius playlists. So, if that is the case that this will not be able to be retrofitted, how long would it take for these cars to get to the USA, October? Are the plants typically closed in August?

Is EDC standard now? I can select my EDC mode and not have to pay extra for that? I hope I'm reading that correctly.

Well this is really frustrating. After waiting for 3+ years to get a 135i I finally pulled the trigger on a 2011 that is currently built and "Awaiting Transport."

If I had known about this, I would've simply waited a few more months.

I know what the PDF says but I hope that the iPod stuff can be added via a software upgrade.

Same here, good thing I didn't get iDrive though otherwise I would be really frustrated that I missed out on the new iPod integration.

AUX has always worked fine for me though, nothing beats the speed of the actual iPhone interface.

(FWIW).
I thought other wise; the adjustments on the E36 (Darth Vader seats) weren't as "driver friendly". But I will take your word for it. I guess they must 've done some substantial changes.
Thanks OP for the PDF file. I like the 550 with the M package

Does it necessarily say the updates to the USB are the same as iPod out feature presented? I guess perhaps "Mobile Phone Device Driver Update" is that feature? I don't completely understand.
