New BM3 tune... top end issue

2016 f31 N20
25k miles
Stock
Drop in filter
New plugs a month ago (NGK 97506 iridium)

Everything feels awesome in lower RPM ranges and the car really pulls now! BUT I took it out yesterday and finally attempted a WOT run from a roll in Sport mode... and the car completely cut out in 3rd gear above 5k RPMs and almost died. The revs kept going and were slow to go back down even with my foot off the pedal. I honestly thought the drivetrain was dead. Pulled over and the car was super shaky at idle, but no codes & no CEL. So I attempted to drive it lightly and was getting zero boost pressure.

Limped it home 2 miles with noticeably no boost pressure, and let the car sit for a while. Started it back up and everything was totally normal. Drove it to work and back and feels like nothing happened.

Obviously I know I need to do some logs, but I’m a little nervous to try and recreate the problem that might result in serious damage. Checked the charge and IC pipes, everything in the engine bay seems tight. I’ve hit fuel cut in my Evo before, and it kind of felt like that but way more abrupt. There is currently no ACN tune available.

Anyone have ideas on what I should probably look at (mechanically) to start troubleshooting this issue? Any suggestions for what to log without having to attempt a hard pull?

Take it to a dealer or flash back to stock - the other options are really just rolling the dice. This scenario was the beginning of the end for mine.

I'd also clean your MAF and replace filter with stock

OP, are you 20i or 28i engine? And have you been running stage 1 and trans tune before?

Agreed you need to have a shop take a look quickly. I feel like all of these odd issues people are having while tuned are signals that these OTS tunes have not been tested long enough and we are using our cars as beta’s.

It could be an octane issue with the terrible 91 octane gas we get in California.

Oof...sounds weird that there is no code at all...
I feel like recently there have been more problems with BM3 tunes. I also have stage1 but honestly never attempted WOT.

F30 N20 320i 2014
Stage 2 OCT 93 AGG
36k miles
Full decat exhaust
FMIC wagner competition
Injen evolution cold air intake
GFB DV+
etc...

when in sport mode, and going on full throttle, my car will cut power on 4rd gear above 5000rpm, then super shaky idle, with no error
turn off the car then turn on, everything comes back to normal

happen everytime when i went full throttle, then at last, drivetrain error showed up, and my engine was blown, piston cracked

What were the oil and filter changes from new? What interval/which oil?
Did you WOT the engine while cold, or did you baby it - no WOT till oil gets to working temperature etc.

change oil every 5000 km, using only recommended by BMW or BMW specialist
oil filter always replace with genuine BMW oil filter every 5000km

i never turn off the cold start, always let the engine run idle for around 1 mins before start moving the car, and i always went WOT after the engine temp needle reach 1/4 of the bar

Damn dude. Thanks for the info and sorry to hear about your experience.
You had a way more aggressive tune than I did, but the similar symptoms are hard to ignore.

I’m not really sure what to do at this point. My engine is in great shape, so I’m chalking it up to terrible California Aarco gasoline at the moment, and running stock for now.

Sorry to hear about your situation. Really interested in hearing what happened please keep us updated.

Replying to your comment, Arco out here is not the best. I was advised against them when picking up my 320i, they're a bit cheaper but quality is trash. For even more evidence I ran my 02 es300 on Arco 91 and that car was starting to pile up problems and im guessing the gas was a factor.

There are ARCO that sucks... you can really feel the difference from one arco to another arco. Seriously I think it's the franchise arco that orders gas and mixed it with something.

Same with mobil gas. There is this gas station in Torrance that just make my car slugish... I think it's the franchise owner mixing them. Making more money on the side.

lesson learned in hard way for me

at first, it thought it just the gas or the tune, change to Stage 2 AGG OCT 91 and change the fuel brand, same symptoms

then i bring to BMW Authorized Service Center, consult the problem, they upgraded my i-level and change the engine oil and spark plugs. After that i drove it for 500km, then the same happened twice, before drivetrain error malfunction showed up, and boom..engine was blown, cyl 3 showed no compression because piston is cracked.

for you, i recommend check the piston condition, if it shows some wear, you better careful with your tune.
Also, perform dataloging with your tune, then send to PTF, they might know the solution

Well... I tried it again, against my better judgement, in order to get some logs. The car did the shutdown again at about 5k rpm on a 3rd gear pull. I thought I had the log with it, but it looks like the OBD errored or something because my log says "Duration unavailable.." and is blank!

I did get these two logs to complete. They are not hard pulls but if someone could tell me if they are useful that would be cool.

My car officially told me that it does not like this tune, behold the scary DME messages:

Super knocking is dangerous to your engine. Did you get any knock with stock ECU? I would not attempt WOT with this kind of error for stage 1. Too risky.

wow, those knocking error is really something
you better check your engine internal, and probably change the gas
try go WOT in stock tune, and see if the same symptoms and error showed up

this is my error message, when my engine blown and piston cracked

I hadn’t thought of attempting logs on the stock map... I’ll do that today!
