Good whiskey?

So, all I really ever drink is some jack on the rocks. Suggestions for something else please? Never had JW blue before, but I hear great stuff about it.

Well, as far as Scotch goes: Macallan 15yr is pretty nice, so is Bowmore if you want single malt. For blended, JW Blue is good but I can't justify spending $100 extra when the difference between Gold Label and Blue is so little

I know it's not the best or the most expensive stuff out there, but it suits my palate just fine. For some reason I can't find it at the local liquor stores so I don't treat myself to it as much as I should

As far as bourbons Makers Mark is a good gold standard, available most anywhere, smooth and buttery. If you want something with more bite, Woodford Reserve of Knob Creek.

I'm quite partial to anything by The Balvenie, their Doublewood 12yr is amazing, it's aged in an oak cask for 10yrs and then a sherry for 2 iirc, not too peaty with a hint of spice I really like. And as far as scotch goes reasonably priced at about $50-60 a bottle

I've had their 15yr as well and it is also very good...but not $25 better than the Doublewood

A bit higher end and the most I've ever been able to justify spending on a bottle of scotch was for the Suntory Yamazaki single malt...very very good I think about $110 a bottle

Gold is better IMO. Not really impressed with blue. If all else fails get you a 200ml sampler of all 5. red-black-green-gold-blue

Depends on what kind of flavors you are looking for.

Personally, I'm a Macallan Drinker.

10yr (awesome for the money) ~$30
12yr (my maintenance scotch)
15yr (good, nice carmel-y aftertaste)
18yr (really really good, nice and complex but super smooth)
21yr (to me, almost the same as 18yr, but costs more, *shrug*)
25yr (only had this once.. and it was indescribable. LOL)

A good friend of mine likes smoky earthy scotches (mostly from Ireland). While I can appreciate the complexity of the flavors, to me it tastes like a smokey peat bog.

Imagine leaning over and taking a bite out of the wall of this..

and you'll get what I'm talking about.

IMO their is no such thing as a 'good' Whiskey.

If it is Scotch Whisky you are after I would recommend Highland Park 18. Very smooth and not too peaty. It is my standby Scotch.

The best one I have ever had was Danzy Jones from Wales. I cannot get it imported here from anywhere, but definitely the best I have ever had.

Blue Label is way over rated. Too little difference between it and the rest to justify the price!

I also really like Glenlivet. Probably my favorite affordable on the rocks drink.

Some drink it with a bit of room temp water to bring out the nose. Others, like myself prefer it neat. Adding ice will deaden the taste and nose.

While I do believe that is true and I would never drink scotch with ice, everyone should drink whatever they want however they want. If he thinks ice makes it taste better, then that is how he should have it. Why drink something you aren't going to enjoy to its fullest?

To the OP, if you are talking about single malt scotch then it depends on what your preferences are.

Do you like a drink with a bit of a bite? If so, a Laphroaig is a good choice. It is a peaty Islay scotch and has a nice smokey/earthy taste. I recommend at minimum the 18 year old bottle, and add a drop or two of water to your glass to smooth it out.

If you like light and smooth, I recommend a Glenkinchie. The 12 year old bottle is just fine. It is a Lowland scotch so it has a grassy/woody taste.

Those two are the extremes in terms of "harshness". In the middle you have a lot of choices as to flavor. If you prefer sweeter drinks, then look for scotch aged in a sherry cask. My personal recommendations are the Macallan cask strength and the Glenmorangie 12 year old. The Glenmorangie is a bit smoother and sweeter.

If you like a fruity/woody flavor, you can't go wrong with Oban 14.

And finally, my favorite, Springbank. It is from Campbelltown. Any year is great. This is the only scotch I can ever describe as creamy. It is so smooth and rich in flavor. The 10 year old bottle is good, the 15 year old bottle is better, and the 30 year old bottle is godlike.

And if you would prefer blended scotch, well I have no fucking idea what is good and what isn't because I don't like it.
