'08 E90M3 6MT troubles...

Well, I had my E90 M3 6MT in for the 15k mile service interval today at Braman BMW in West Palm Beach. I waited on my car & drove it home. I noticed first that the oil was now at Max, unlike when I changed my oil at 7000 miles & it was just about 3/4 of the max indicator so I wanted to let the car sit for a bit & go back & check it out on a real flat surface.

Well, as I start the car up, I hear some noise coming from somewhere that sounded almost like something was stuck somewhere, like a ping pong ball floating around hitting things. I called my SA & told him that that noise was definetly not there before the oil change. I drove down & they put the M3 on the lift immediately.

From the looks of it, it sounds like either the double weighted flywheel or the throw-out bearing is toast. They will be taking things apart tomorrow & letting me know what the problem is. It's all covered under the warranty (thank god) but now I got a stupid rental loaner, chrysler cebring convertable till it's fixed!

Tout est couvert par la garantie (Dieu merci) acheter maintenant J'ai un prêteur de location stupide, chrysler cebring convertible jusqu'à ce qu'il soit fixé!

Avez-vous remarqué que ce genre de problèmes ne sont jamais remarqués par la technologie ou le SA? avant Le client récupère la voiture ?

Technic...I was thinking the same thing when I first heard the noise in my garage. I actually expected to hear that there was a problem when I got my M3 back...last time we had my wife's X5 in for an maint. service at Braman BMW under the CPO extended maint. warranty (which absolutely stinks!) we were informed that the driver's side CV Boot ripped, cost us $900...then 2 weeks later when we had a coolant leak (replaced coolant reservoir under warranty) we were told the other CV Boot ripped. Told me it was $625 because they felt bad & gave us a discount...Ended up being around $760 after taxes!

Could they brake/damage the car deliberately, so that you spend money there fixing it? Businesses are very desperate for survival in recession. One old man told me this story once,- In 1930's he drove in a truck with his dad, delivering apples. Times were very tough, no jobs, no money, everyone was broke, everyone was desperate. The truck he drove with his dad was braking down every week. So, they kept driving this truck back into repair shop over and over again, and it just kept on braking...untill one other time they brought the truck back in for repairs, one of the workers at the station went over this man's father-driver of truck and told him, that the shop mechanics brake, and damage parts in his truck deliberately...the man was fired on the spot...so they had to take this honest and brave shop worker with them to work in the fields picking up apples, where he worked with them for the next 20 years or so... True story.

I call those "magical breakdowns", now you see them and now you don't...

I don't know what is the point of charging $180 an hour if the end result is the same as taking the car to PepBoys.

Moral of the story "Stay out of the Stealerships!".

Braman BMW in West Palm Beach is a pretty bad dealer, I used them once while I was living in that area.

They still haven't looked at it yet

got a call from the SA just now...still no pinpoint on what was causing the noise They said the Throw-out bearing was fine & all tolerances were good. Clutch was good & flywheel was good & didn't show any sign of wear.

So they are waiting to hear from the regional Tech specialist & see if BMW wants to just put in a new flywheel & clutch & see if there is no more noise or keep the stock clutch & flywheel & put in a new tranny. They say there has been a few instances where the shaft behind the "Y" fork that pushes the throw-out bearing has weared a little, causing some noises.

The part that pisses me off is that I was planning to go to the Active Autowerks meet Saturday & no matter what, the car will not be ready

Well, they talked to the regional tech...no clue.

So they are replacing the front end of the tranny assembly...clutch, flywheel, throw-out bearing & "Y" Fork. Unfortunately none of the parts that have to be ordered will be in till Tuesday!

Well at least they let me trade in the enterprise rental for 2010 328si Loaner with 2230 miles on it. It's got a lot of pep at least!

I had similar problem with my 335i at a time, was rattling, bouncing kind of sound from around of clutch/transmission whereabouts... it was a nightmare to even locate where exactly it was coming from, and difficult to duplicate, as always is the case. My initial thought was something broke loose, therefore broken....and brakeaway peace would eventually get stuck and brake everything else. Car was at dealer for days, and they just kept taking the car apart more and more...and everything checked out OK, untill....later on they found a stupid quarter ($.25) flying around inside components making all the stupid noise. All was fine afterall! They put the car back together and all was fine ever since.
P.S. The car was driving fine the whole time, its just the sound was horrible...and except for the time they took it apart ofcourse.

You live in Florida and can't spell Sebring (or convertible)? Evidently not a race fan...or young...or both.

How the f*ck did a quarter get in there?!

Sounds to me like someone was out joyriding in your car and messed up the clutch.

...probably fell out of techs pocket while they were taking car apart? In any case I never got to see the damn quarter and just maybe they made it all up... this whole "service" is such a scam.

Could the quarter get inside through air vent from under the seat somehow? ....and I assume staying in the vent making all that noise and never getting into tranny? Thats what I was thinking when they told me they found quarter...

I go to bmw south in miami which is out of your way i know, but the techs and advisors are great at least the two that i request to work on the M when she goes for service.
Its a shame what happened to you

Well, jsut to put some facts out there...

There is still the noise when the clutch is pushed down. Also, there was a bit of a vibration I felt when I drove my M3 back to the dealership that I had never felt before that...one that was a little more prevelant the fast you went, but can't remember if it was synced to the rpms & not car speed.

As for replecating the sound, the SA & 2 techs were there with me when I brought it back & heard it themselves.

Anyway, car should be put back together later today or tomorrow with the new parts. I'm gonna tell them that even if the noise doesn't go away, I'm taking my car.

exactly why i change my own oil MYSELF every 5000 miles... its better to spend $130 every few months than to have problems like this.
