Thanks for the very helpful and detailed explanation. From the looks of it, I’ll probably have to replace my alternator as well. I’m sporadically getting the same error code: “00278D BSD, Alternator: Missing”.

The question is whether the entire alternator needs to be replaced or if it’s enough to just change the voltage regulator.

Either way, the alternator has to come out in both cases :)
With the regulator somewhere around $200 USD, I'd probably just change the whole alternator with the OE Valeo around $400 USD, especially if it's still original on your car.


edit: looks like you could also go with a reman BOSCH for $300 USD.
In fact, I think I will get a new generator from Valeo. I don't want to do the work twice. Bosch is also an option, but I will stick with Valeo.

I hope the error goes away then. I'll report…
