DCT adaptation reset

got a question for you guys, is it necessary to do a DCT adaptation reset at
73K miles?

my car is 2009.

I just got my rod bearing and both throttle actuator replaced and the shop owner recommends DCT adaptation reset.

to me, car drives just fine except clunky 1st gear in slow speed(parking lot speed).

Short answer - no need.

Long answer - The only time you need to reset adaptations is when you replace parts that require adaptations to be calibrated, like clutch packs.

Do you have the stock DCT software? Or any of the GTS variants?

It is a stock DCT software.

What the shop owner says is that, now the car has 75k miles, the clutch packs has been worn a bit so resetting DCT is needed. He is charging me $100.00.
I am probably just going do it this Friday out of curiosity.
I'll let you know afterwards.

The DCT self adjusts as the clutch packs wear. you are being scammed by the shop owner.

Or he doesn't know what he is talking about - both options are bad change shop.

Spend this money on a DCT software reflash instead.

Needed? No. Bad idea or any downside to it? Also no. I reset my DCT adaptations within the last year. Didn't notice much of a difference, but YMMV.

For $100 you're about halfway to getting Bimmergeeks Protool and a Thor dongle. Just buy that and do all your diagnostics, error resets, module testing/reset and coding on your own in the future.

So paying 100$ for a procedure that we know is not needed and not going to or is intended to fix any faults is not a bad idea?

Its an OK idea if you have your own cable and want to do it at home, and even then - no point to do it really.

I decided not to get the DCT reset.

On my 2006 E90 330i with auto tranny, when I'm on sport mode and coming to a slow down, the tranny down shift's automatically low enough that I can feel a little bit of engine brake.
I don't get that on my 2009 M3 DCT even on 4 or 5 setting.
I feel like my DCT keeps gear too high in auto mode during a slow down before a turn.
In fact, the car down shifts in the middle of a turn and not before a turn.
it's a small issue I have with my DCT. I have learned to accept that this is normal.
How are other DCT's ?

I know someone is going to tell me to drive manually. I do 1/3 of the time.

on a side note, now that I got 2 new throttle actuators(at 73K miles), my car shift noticeably quicker on up shift or down shift and I had no prior engine light or any code.

It's normal. Coming to a stop from 7th, it mostly acts like a manual car where you'd push the clutch in while coming to a stop, and will skip some gears like going from 7th to 4th.

If it's jerky while slowing down to a stop, like you can feel it downshift and engage 1st in situations where you would've otherwise just clutched in and gone to neutral with a manual transmission, the GTS tune helps a lot with that in particular

I just had my E92 do an ISTA adaption test plan on my DCT. It’s a multi-stepped process, and it’s 100 percent needed on higher mileage DCTs. Here’s why, but first, a mini backstory

I have a BPM tune and Mike's BPM DCT Sports Flash. After Mike's flash, it cleans up the clunkiness in lower gears and engages way faster both up and down the shifts.

A year after the flash, I had my DCT dropped, and completely serviced—all the seals, mechatronics connecter o-ring, sucking jet pump, fluids, and filter.

All seemed fine until hanging with Mike one day, and he asked if I performed the adaption process after the service. He mentioned the clutch packs do get worn and that engagement could be off after re-servicing.

The results:
We ran the procedure, and it showed both the 1st and 2nd gears were off by .08 bar and less for the other gears. It doesn’t seem like much, but what a difference it made. I took it out for a test drive in ///M Mode, and using the paddles. The shifts are super clean and smoother than they have ever been. The kick in the back wasn’t as violent unless you turn off traction control and go max shift aggressiveness. Driving in regular auto mode is so good. Zero clunkiness or metal shifting sounds. No more boggy feeling when going into reverse and reverse to drive, and vice versa. Gear engagement is done instantaneously with no drama in any mode.

Do the adaption. Make sure it’s done right by warming the car up and then using ISTA 5-step procedure.

Hi Redd, planning to get a Bimmergeek master and cable (Carly so far). Reading lots of good stuff but can't find any feature details. Do you have it, and have you confirmed it handles DCT adaption?
Trick question on top; do you know if this is similar to bmwdoubles below ISTA-5 work?

Yes Protool can do DCT reset. I had weird downshifts once and did a DCT reset which solved the problem. However I don't remember Protool showing me details like ISTA. Maybe I'll do a reset again this weekend and report back.

Eager to order the Bimmergeek kit (figure the whole shebang incl BT dongle and cable), but trying to hold back and first confirm it will do the stuff Im looking for. Had a look at Foxwell but currently believe Bimmergeeks is better.

Ps. Any prep prior reset, reading box should be warmed up?

Yes you can hear the actuators during reset. Let me know what other features u need, I can check my Protool this weekend.

Yes you can do DCT reset and clear adaptations with Protools. Screenshot below. I did just the ECU reset and there were no actuators sounds. I didn't try the Clear Adaptations.

I also did EDC reset for my friend's E60 M5 this morning but he said he didn't feel any difference. He did have a 5FE6 EDC damper code stored so maybe the issue is with the damper.

Hi Redd, started to play around with the Protool, seems nice.

Reading around quite a few suggest to not clear adaptations (if not new clutches) on the transmission as adjustments for wear will dissapear and possibly create and issue. On the other hand its not clear to me what Protool actually does on the M-DCT. The limited info I can find is refering to BMW auto trans' in general (nothing much on Bimmergeeks FB either).

What of the various options did you run (Kiss points, Clutch Torque etc)?
Do you know if "ECU reset" is the learned driving style?
Some says engine should run, other says it should not?

Ps. Sorry for chasing you mate. Yeah, maybe we should set up a separate Protool thread, a lot of features to discuss...
