so only Max and Seb have ever overturned a points deficit as large as George Russell in modern F1.

so i'm calling it, Kimi is going to be WDC. he is a bit loose here and there but he has more raw pace than George.

some of my conclusions after the Canadian GP.

First, wow, what a McLaren mess up with the tire strategy! It gave Verstappen the oportunity to get to the podium. I wonder how that went, did the drivers have any say in it or not?

Second, RedBull is slowly closing the gap. If McLaren didn't mess up, podium would be out of reach, but they are closing in on the 3 top teams. Well mayby the 2 teams behind the top team. Because:

Third, Mercedes is just incredible. They are in a league of it's own. I have no doubt they wil become WDC both constructor and driver. Hope it will be Kimi.

Yes that was also my confusion.
I mean PIA already said over the radio during the end of the formation lap (the first one) that the track was way too dry for intermediates, and wondered (or whished?) to come in.
In that moment, I think the information of the driver should decide which tyre strategy should be used. The strategists at McLaren should immediately start to calculate and check the rules to get him in. For sure if he should come in, it would be better to do it right away and start from the pit exit than come in after just a few laps and loose all his positions.
But the vibe I got was that at the other end of that McLaren line there was just silence....
If PIA wanted to come in he just should've called it in and done that, and it's up to the team to have those tyres ready if you ask me.
In that moment of doubt (not only from McLaren but also from PIA) you can see that they're really not WDC material. And with WDC material I mean that they can win a WDC in a well matched situation. If you have a rocketship car like last year (or what RB had in '24 or Merc in the beginning of the turbo hybrid era) pretty much anyone can become a WDC and the biggest opponent is the team mate...(and that's where team MERC is now again)

IMHO . With still 17 races to go , It's too early to say that Kimi wins the 2026 WDC.
I agree , Kimi has raw pace , but in the fastest car at the grid. The Benz car rules and that is crystal clear.
But that also applies for RUS..

On the other hand : Kimi is very young and still unnecessary reckless..
I mean , locking up twice in the same lap and wheel to wheel making contact with RUS increases the risk enormously to DNF (!)
(And that will certainly happen again , because RUS is a real fighter and sometimes with dirty tricks)
If Kimi just gets one DNF , then RUS is back in the game and Kimi gets more pressure..
The battle between the Benz drivers is not over yet (!)

Nice thread starter! The upgrade war is getting crazy this season. If Mercedes' package works well in Montreal, the podium battle between them, McLaren, and Red Bull is going to be epic.

My money is on a podium finish for both Russell and Norris. Let's see how the sprint weekend plays out！
