Sad news; hope your time together is memorable for both and pain free for her.
Diddled around today. Tomorrow I replace brake hoses and flush fluid on my old car (well, not as old as I am). I did the under-the-hood replacements and associated flush over the weekend.

After that I have to engineer a bracket to hold our TV, which I cannot lift alone, above the fireplace mantle (stone facade, nothing standard sized). I plan to put that off for most of this week. My son sent me 5 hours of YT video to watch on the Renaissance and Machiavelli and I am in the middle of a book, so I’m feeling a bit swamped.

To Do includes replacing a dock float that escaped (and was recaptured), so a permanent fix is needed for it. Also stripping and re-staining the dock, and new stairs to the deck. Have an exterior door I need to remove, sand and refinish. And a garden of rocks and weeds to excavate, refill with topsoil and prep for my wife to plant. These will easily take me to Thanksgiving.

We had an newly commissioned pimply-faced Ensign assigned to the ship. His first job was head of the engine room. The chief machinist mate was a Senior Chief (E-8) and after a week or so had had enough of this Ensign telling him how to run HIS engine room. The Chief marched up to the Captain (who was a senior Captain just getting his time-in-type before being eligible for the flag ranks) and basically read the Captain the riot act and said if he didn't get that snot-nosed, pimply-faced out of HIS engine room he was going to quit. The Captain, knowing a thing or three, told the Chief he would take care of it. The Ensign was banned from the engine room after that! Took some time for that Ensign to realize that his college degree didn't trump the experience of the NCO's!
One of my least favorite periods in the Navy was when I took off my Chief Petty Officer insignia and put on my limited Duty Officer Ensign bars. Suddenly I went from "Ask the Chief" to the bottom of the officer totem pole. Since I was working in a relatively small specialty field, the whitehats did not give me much trouble. I felt that the officers did not appreciate my depth of knowledge, though. (On the other hand, in making the transition I was giving up technical duties and expected to exercise management and leadership.)

I may have said this before -- the Navy was more "fun" as an enlisted. Getting promoted was all very fine -- more pay, more doo-dads on the uniform, etc.But as the years passed I found myself spending an awful lot of time sitting behind a desk doing very little real work.

Godspeed.
Good friend and I drove to lunch in his 1964 Ford Galaxie 500XL convertible,
with the top down. 60 miles, round trip. 352 V-8, dual exhaust, glasspack
mufflers. Two old retired farts living a piece of the old days.

Growing up my Dad had a 1965 Galaxie 500 LTD; same engine & exhaust minus the glasspacks. I rebuilt the carburetor and I must have done something wrong as I went from 10 mpg to 8!

As to what I did today, sat back and watched some TV while installers installed our new laminate floors. Now comes the fun part of putting 3 rooms of stuff back.
This morning, pulled the leg off my boat motor to replace the water pump(3/4 completed)cleaned up and went to a funeral for an old friend, at the glass shop now getting a new windshield for my truck and later this afternoon going to the hospital to bring dinner to a close friend who is recovering from a hip replacement. This evening I will finish the boat motor. Heading to the lake with grandchildren Monday so boat needs to be ready.
I wasn’t very ambitious today, maybe the same motivation level as Cheech. Or was it Chong.

“On the first day of my vacation (or retirement), I went downtown and hung out at the drugstore.”
“On the second day of my retirement, I went downtown and hung out at the drugstore.”
“On the third day, I got a job at the drugstore…”
Started getting the house back in order after our new floor install. I'm getting too old for this...
