Surprising to see so many people just here to shit on soccer.
The problem with diving is a systemic one created by the rules, its not really on the players.
The way the game sets up, there is a HUGE advantage to drawing penalties and cards on the other team, and there is simultaneously not enough enforcement of the rules against diving AND not enough refs that can call penalties.
So the players are trying to win the game, and the ref is fuck all far away from most plays. If they actually get fouled and they don't exaggerate the ref wont call the penalty, and if they think they can sell the fake foul well enough they can be massively rewarded; and there you have it, a system set up to encourage people to fake the extent of their injury for good reason.

It was a thriller return from the Belgians (!)
The ref isnt guessing how much time to add. They run a stopwatch every time play is stopped that sums the stoppage time and then add close to or exactly that number in stoppage. Its a pretty great way to do time keeping if your goal is to test the fitness of the players.
i find it interesting that when the players get near the penalty box they suddenly forget how to pass. just shoot at the goal no matter the situation. half the time when they shoot at the goal there are 2 unmarked teammates in the box.
at least the VAR is picking up on important things that referees don't, but not all important things it seems.
i really felt bad for iran. either let them in and let them play, or don't let them in. and they almost qualified for the KO too, but for the referee who won't blow the whistle until Austria scored then immediately ended the match!
