The Stammtisch. A bit of German tradition.

"A Stammtisch is a German term meaning a "regulars' table"—both the physical table reserved for a regular group and the informal, recurring get-together itself.

• The Table: A designated spot in a pub, bar, or restaurant saved for loyal local customers or a specific club.
• The Gathering: A casual, unprogrammed meeting where friends or like-minded people catch up on a fixed schedule without needing an RSVP.
• The Vibe: Relaxed conversation often touching on local news, philosophy, sports, or politics over drinks and food.

Cultural Impact

• No Scheduling Hassle: Because the time and place are permanent, members simply show up if they are free.
• Political Slang: The phrase Stammtischpolitik refers to loud, simplistic, or populist opinions voiced casually among peers in a pub setting."

As I have mentioned in the past, I resided in Germany for five years working under contract for the military. The Stammtisch was an unadorned table devoid of any table cloth or any other decorations. Maybe a sign or an ashtray. You would never sit there as a visitor or tourist. Actually, a Stammtisch was rarely found in the large tourist venues and more in local villages.
After work, I would very often eat at my local gasthaus. It was great food and definitely not " A la carte.". You may have two choices on a good day.

After about a year of being a regular fixture, a familiar gregarious old gentleman approached me and asked me to join the rebel rousers at the table. If you lived in Germany, you know that, in mafia's terms, you were made. And I was a guest at the table until I left.

Upon my departure, they presented with a Stammtisch, not just any Stammtisch but the one that was on their table for god knows how long. I cried, They hugged. For what seemed an eternity. I was leaving a family.

What an absolute honour! And a timely post as well. I just happen to be enjoying a cold beer in one of my favourite mugs. I picked this one up in Nuremberg a few years back. Warsteiner is one of my favourite beers but sadly it's not available locally so I am drinking Pilsner Urquell right now.

Um yes. And was gifted a smaller boot in return for... um... entertaining everyone else. I don't use it very often.

I worked for UPS in Nürnberg for a year. We had a Stammtisch at a gasthaus right near the UPS terminal. The centerpiece of our table was like the one you have except it had a miniature UPS truck hanging in the center. This place served Wienerschnitzel and pomme frites that was heavenly. I miss those days. We would sit around after work talking about some of the deliveries or pickups we had that day. Good times.

(All I got when I left was a bunch of personal notes from the other drivers written on the waitress's pad.)

Cordon Bleu , Spätzle and Rotkohl, Dark farmer's bread and mustard. with a warm potato salad. And like you, I sure miss it.
