An item to consider is the reluctor ring/Vehicle Speed
Sensor (also called Wheel Speed Sensor or ABS Sensor). If these stop working as intended, they will activate the ABS system causing pulsing of the brakes. I think this typically throws a code, but it may not. In my case the codes suggests a problem with the front VSS, but I think it is actually the reluctor ring.

If the reluctor ring corrodes, it can expand and contact the VSS, potentially damaging the VSS. The ring will show high spots as a shiny worn surface. On the x-drive cars the front wheels use a reluctor ring on the drive shaft just inside the splines that go into the front hub (Some cars/locations use a magnetic sensor inside the wheel bearing in lieu of a reluctor ring).

I believe my problem is a corroded reluctor ring and the preferred solution is to remove the drive shaft and replace the reluctor ring. Unfortunately these do not seem to be available from normal, reliable, sources. If the reluctor ring cannot be replaced, the alternative is a new drive shaft.

I would check into the reluctor ring/VSS issue before assuming a more expensive Transfer case issue.

If anyone can advise on a source for a new reluctor ring, I would appreciate it.
