Replacing front struts
2008 335xi e90
I replaced the rear shocks with no problems, now I’d like to tackle the front struts but I have one main concern. The springs. How much of a hassle are these? Should I have a shop attach them? Thanks |

You can buy preassembled struts. Swapping springs between old and new struts using spring compressors is tedious but doable. But then you'll want to replace the mounts, bump stop, spring perch pad... and yeah, it can be a hassle.
Prices are all over the place for preassembled. I bought Bilstein OEM from strutmonkey.com. They're competitive and eliminate a lot of the hassle. |

I'd suggest having a shop swap the springs, I tried the AutoZone loaner set but it freaked me out because torquing the tool isn't the safest job. A local shop charged me $75 to add the lowering Spring Perches and I installed the assembled struts.

I used cheap spring compressors without major issues on my RWD. The non-sport springs were more of a pain due to their longer length, but the sport springs were fine. Wasn't really any different from any other strut from my experience.
I have the same compressors used in the following guide. I'd imagine it would be easier with better compressors: http://speed.academy/bmw-e90-e92-335...stall-guide/4/ |

Get yourself Bilstein B6 struts or B4 if you want more OE feel. Get a good compressor (not cheap) to do job or give it to someone. Don't try to go cheap on a compressor tool. |
