Kumho all-season tires... Are they worth it?

Hi,

Creating various packages on tire rack, I noticed the Kumho all-seaon tires - Kumho Ecsta 4x got pretty good reviews. Even tire rack test results speak highly of their grip etc. And they're priced pretty cheap. Have anyone actually tried these tires besides the reviews on tire rack?

Link to test results:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=151

These were tested against:
General G-MAX AS-03 (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17 91W)
Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105 (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17 94W)
Yokohama AVID ENVigor (W) (Ultra High Performance All-Season 225/45R17 94W)

And that too on a 328i E92

Thoughts?

Go with General G-MAX AS-03 or Kumho Ecsta 4x. They seem to be the popular choice with our tire packages with all season tires.

Kumho 4xs should be fine for everyday driving. There are other all-seasons that I might go with, but they are priced higher (Continental ExtremeContact DWS).

Really? Kumho are actually good tires? At the price point it's hard to believe.

Price is not always indicative of performance.

I have 18" Kumho Ecsta ASX. For the 1st 10k miles, they are fine. Low noise, good grip. After that, they become very noisy. They are useless even in light snow. I can't even drive up my driveway which is not steep at all. I will not buy them again.

For a daily, I think the Platinums are a very good value.

Can't comment on the Kumho's in particular, but I relied on TireRack tire reviews (both the written blurb as well as the test numbers (braking distance, lap time, etc.)) to purchase multiple different tires and the tires always met my expectations. I also tend to go to the mid-tier tires, and they do indeed offer you 90% of the performance for 60% of the cost of the premium tires.

The only thing I'll caution is that some tires were only tested a long time ago (multiple years), and these don't really compare well to more recent tests and more modern tires. I bought a tire that tested very well at its time but was inferior to newer tires that tested about the same on paper.

My E46 came with Kumho's when I bought it used, I was happy with the ride and performance but replaced them with Perrelli tires. My E92 had Michelin Run-Flats when I bought it but I replaced them with PS4S' when they wore out, I won't go back now.

I think that I saw great reviews for Firehawks which are budget minded buyers, might be worth checking out.
