530 vs 330?

i drove both and the 530 seems to pull harder, could it be possible to tune a 330 to 530 specs?

just throwing it out there

Remember the ECU adapts to your driving habits. If you drive your car conservatively it'll feel "slower." If the 530 you drove was driven enthusiastically then that's why you would think it felt faster.

With numbers, the 530 is slower.

Actually a base 2006 530i is only 55lb heavier than a base 2006 330i.

Agreed, this sounds like the most likely explanation.

ya its a lot, but when you compare cars like ours its not too bad. They weights less like for example the Audi A4 which has a much smaller 2.0T engine has a curb weight of 3715 for quatro and 3538 for front track. Then the MB C350 has a weight of 3615 lbs.

Check the drive ratios. That will tell you the story. The 530 MT has a higher final drive ration than a 330 so it's possible that it will pull stronger. I don't know all the gearbox ratios to know what the effective drive ratios are. Here are the rear end ratios:

330 MT = 3.15
530 MT = 3.23
330 Auto = 3.64
530 auto = 3.64

3.15 to 3.23 is a pretty small increase but is probably adequate to compensate for an extra couple hundred pounds of mass. I had the final drive ratio on my 330 changed from 3.15 to 3.38 and it definately made a difference in acceleration.

According to Wikipedia the E60 530i has 272 HP -- about 20 more than the E90 330i.

Wikipedia is wrong -- or, more accurately, you're reading it wrong. The E60 530i and E90 330i had the exact same 255 HP (SAE) engines in 2006 when the E90 330i was imported into North America.

The higher HP number for the 2007 and later 130i, 330i, and 530i is due to adding direct injection beginning in the 2007 models. Also, that is metric HP (equals 268 HP SAE), so it's actually exactly 13 more HP than the non-DI engine.

My ECU has been calling me by my first name when no one's around lately. Should I be concerned?

While I haven't tried it myself, this seems to work: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=63796

If not, disconnecting the battery will definitely do it.
