So i've been told the front windows are already at the limit and as soon as you add even the lightest tint it becomes illegal. Any truth to this?

Yes that’s correct.

Minimum visible light transmission (VLT) for the front side glass is 70%. Most factory glass is already close to this so as soon as you add the tint it drops it to below this minimum.

However I’ve always run 50% tints with no issues as it’s only very subtle and still allows the occupants to be be visible. Rears I generally do 35% so it’s just subtle.
