Clunk on shutdown and ticking noise (6AT)
Hi guys
I just bought my second 335i N54 6AT. It has about 100k miles, turbos were changed on 33k miles and it has all index 10 injectors. Car runs really well. I noticed 2 noises I didn't have on my previous 335i. 1. Ticking noise pretty bright, you hear it also when driving by a wall with windows open. It's synced with RPM. Doesn't sound like injectors to me. You hear it pretty good around 4 sec.: 2. Clunk when shutting down engine. You can feel it also on the floor. Remember this is on an automatic.: What do you think this could be? Thanks |

Issue number 1 is normal injector ticking....perfectly normal
Issue number 2 is the clicking noise on shutdown.....I had a similar noise after startup on the first rev of the engine. A distinct clicking clunky snap. Recently replaced my exhaust solenoid due to a engine code indicating it was jamming mechanically and the noise is now gone. Turns out the vanos solenoids are pin operated internally , so maybe that is the source of that clicking. |

Thanks. I hope you're right on issue 1.
Issue 2 in the meantime I found out: It's from the active steering (S2VHA) and is also normal if you google it. It's the first time I have this option so I didn't knew that sound. |

Noise 1 sounds like typical injector noises.
If you remove the engine cover and can distinctly here 1 or more louder then others it could be an indication it's on its way out. I had 2 that were VERY loud and by no accident they were toast. I had idle issues, especially on cold start. The spark plugs in those respective cylinders were fouled by no accident. I ended up replacing all 6 to index 12 and I highly recommend it. Since the car runs really well you are probably fine but something to note; anything index 10 or below are failure prone. They can leak or not spray correctly. This can lean out cylinders or wash out cylinders with fuel. This fuel wash can contaminate your oil, reducing lubrication in the engine and commonly results in bearing failure. I understand many folks may have cars that are running well and/or dont want to drop $750+ on injectors but just keep that in mind. |

Hello guys,
535i E60 with active steering, 6sp. Same annoying clunking shutter noise when I turn off the engine. I just rebuilt the engine with new OEM turbos, including a new OEM dual-mass flywheel, new clutch, and all components. I also replaced the engine mounts. This noise was present before and after the rebuild. I hear the clunk of the throttle body altogether but its not only that. You can hear it sometimes by turning on and off the ignition. Before the rebuild I thought it was a worn out flywheel and that's why I decided to put all new things but how was depressed it was to hear that clunking same day I put the engine back. Question to yall, how and why you though that it an active steering? Is it a pump or the rack clunks when pumps stops spinning? |
