Öhlins BMS Mi01 Road and Track

I am in the market for a coilover setup to replace the original m-sport suspension in my 2011 335D. Can someone give me their experience with this specific kit with the coils that are included. As well as their experience with Öhlins customer support.

I've found two part #s for this kit. BMS Mi00 and BMS Mi01. Both are listed for the same application but the former has lower spring rates. Is it right to assume that the BMS Mi01 is just an updated kit? I've read about complaints that the spring rate is too low, which may be a problem for the heavier 335D.

Price wise I was shopping between the KW v3 and Ohlins R&T and am set on ohlins as it will retain a closer to stock ride height and ease of adjustability while still managing high/low speed compression and rebound.

The older BMS Mi00 kit had 60N/mm front and 90N/mm rear springs. Most didn't like the rear rates because it was too soft. Why such a low spring rate you may ask? The flimsy rear subframe bushings couldn't handle much higher rates without making the rear of the car feel like a big pogo stick. Even though the rear dampers can control the oscillation of the springs, they can not control the movement of the subframe. Therefore Ohlins had to settle at that rate.

Most that went with coilovers likely have upgraded the rear subframe bushings to the M3 version, solid or some sort of inserts. With that the rear spring rates can be upgraded. The most common thing to do back in the BMS Mi00 day was to use the Swift 12 kg spring which we have often included at no charge.

Ohlins listened and the BMS Mi01 from Ohlins was born. 70N/mm front springs and 120N/mm rears and completely reworked the valving to handle these springs.

Shoot us a PM if you have any other questions or ready to make the purchase.

HP have given you a good summary there OP.

I've had the orginal set-up fitted for 8 years (about 90,000miles) and been very pleased with it. It may surprise some that I actually found the front springs (60Nm) too harsh and I swapped them to 50Nm. Overall Ohlins gives great handling and a silky smooth ride (I have my dampers set to full soft). For road use I would imagine the new spring rates would be harder, but I guess you can no longer buy the older set-up, even if you wanted to.

The other plus with Ohlins is that the dampers can be serviced. My local Ohlins specialist rebuilt mine after 50K miles of use and will be doing so again shortly.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the review, it looks like there are still some "new old-stock" kits available at some US/Canadian retailers although I plan to use the revised kit as my car is a bit heavier being a 335D and I do use it for autocross and HPDE throughout the year.

I must say I love my Ohlins.

Glad to see they fixed the spring rates finally and valved them correctly for the new ones.

I was running the MI00s on my wagon, and found the rear end too soft. Mind you I was also often doing wagon duty, which meant hauling the family and gear to sports events.

I swapped out to 400/800 Swift springs, and found with the wagon they are right on the money. I did not get them revalved, as the Ohlins rep stated they are in the operable range (will probably do it at rebuild time)

Make sure you upgrade the rear subframe bushings or at least install the inserts with that rate. The rear subframe can move around a more with added spring rates.

With the old Mi00 kit, going 30% in either direction with spring rates are typically acceptable. Sometimes you can get a way with a bit more.

I do have M3 RSFBs, but good point. Appreciate the feedback on the rate increase.

Does anyone know if Ohlins makes these for xDrive cars? Haven't been able to find a kit so I assume they don't.

Not for E chassis.

Shoot us a DM if you want a TCKR kit for your E9x x-drive.
