L5 Hydraulic Steering Rack Bushing
Been chasing an issue with some vague steering on my pre lci 328i for a while. Resolved most of it but always wanted a bit more. I know our cars don't have anything rubber to dampen vibrations in the steering assembly and the teflon bushing can take a beating. Especially if you neglect your thrust arm bushings like I did.
Did some digging and found a rack rebuild kit for the L5 rack. From there I was able to identify that the seller has a listing for JUST the thrust bushing. To my knowledge this part has not been shared anywhere online like it has with the F series bushing. Take a look for part HLP00032 on eBay. Looking for a seller called steering-shop. The only models listed in the title are E60 based but if you look in the description it applies to the e90 as well. Same rack across different models. Waiting on mine to come in currently. Once it does I will post an update here and let you all know how it goes. Currently at ~120,000 miles. If this was posted in the wrong section I apologize. Also not sure why the lister took the photo from this angle lol. Including a photo from the other listing for a complete rebuild kit so you can see the front face. Disclaimer, please wait until I update before buying. I could be bamboozled ![]() ![]() Last edited by jroks574; 05-28-2025 at 02:49 PM.. |

It does appear that the parts are correct. I have to slightly push the new bushing into the metal block which is of slight concern. Considering it was shipped in an envelope with minimal bubble wrap from across the globe I imagine it just got a little flatter from the high heat and pressure of other mail on top of it. Should be fine once it is in the rack and under tension though. The bushing on the left is from a 2011 unit with unknown mileage. The new bushing is definitely thicker but not by a ton. We will see if this makes a difference in a day or two once it is installed
