E91 Tailgate camera will not fit
If you are looking for a combined tailgate switch / rear view camera, most of what you will find searching will not fit the E91 in spite of them show fitment for E91. See attached picture of the one typically sold. The top of the unit has a microswitch that sticks out above the housing. When installing this will not pass the interior bump from the inset of the badge and will break or bend the switch to the point of bending the switch mount beyond the point where the switch will work or the whole unit will just come apart when the switch breaks away from the tab it is mounted to. I have not found a single switch an Amazon that will in fact work.
The non-camera switches on Amazon do appear to work, but watch for the protruding microswitch that only shows in the alternate views. If you want to mount a camera on an E91, you will have to use an independent camera. The cleanest install would be to use something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CMBXWCBL...v_ov_lig_dp_it which could be mounted to the left or right of the switch and would have the least possibility of leaks or rusting. I am going to try this unit and will report back on success or failure. |

I mounted the camera I posted about tonight. I will try to post pictures tomorrow of the installation. Drill the hole proved to be a bit of a challenge as you cannot get a straight on approach to the flat section that contains the hatch switch and license plate light. On the positive side, once the hole is drilled, it is not difficult to mount the camera. With the hatch switch out, it is relatively easy to get the lock washer and nut on the threaded stem (use the longer adapter that is already on the camera. A pair of needle node pliers will be able to access the nut through the switch opening to tighten the nut down. Routing the cable from this location and through into the wagon body will be a new challenge.

Hi Mate,
How did you get on with this camera, everything work out well with it? I had the one in the picture when I first got my E91 (It was already installed), then the camera broke so i ordered a new one, which is exactly the same. Tried re-fitting it and noticed that the clearance on the switch for the boot is absolutely shocking to the point where it snapped off the button. It is a bad design for the E91... god knows how the previous owner managed to get this one to fit and work beforehand without snapping the boot switch. |

I did actually manage to get that combined boot/trunk switch with camera to fit in my E91 (since sold). I had the same issue you had but I used a dremel to carefully grind off the plastic as much as I could without affecting the wiring. With a couple of mm shaved off and a rounded edge, with a bit of force it cleared the protrusion and clicked into place. Feeding the wiring through the hatch was another pain though. Did not enjoy that job.

Hello, sorry if my post wasn’t published correctly, but I’m having a problem with the same camera that’s integrated with the trunk release button.
After installing the camera, it works only when the car is on ignition and I shift into reverse. However, when I start the engine and then put it in reverse, the camera doesn’t work anymore — the display starts getting interference and there’s no picture. I’d really appreciate hearing your opinions or suggestions. Thank you! |
