My concern with this flight is that NASA discovered an unexpected safety issue with the Orion capsule's heat shield after the un-crewed Artemis I flight. Instead of re-designing the shield and running another un-crewed test, NASA's usually-conservative safety culture decided to just load up four guinea pig astronauts on the same heat shield design since the capsule was already assembled, make a tweak to the reentry path, and hope for the best.....

So I sent this to a friend who's an ME that designs rocket engines for his input. Why does it look the same basically after 50 years? Yes electronics and interior are different, and the payload is completely different, but the capsule looks.....the same. Maybe it's the most efficient, but can't believe that it is......and why just a slingshot around? To say we did?

I live about 75 miles from the space center, by the beach. So I will get a nice view of this if the weather stays as clear as it is now.

We watched this while eating at a Thai restaurant. Other people there were apparently unaware there was a launch and were saying, "Oh, are they launching the shuttle again?" Sigh.

I work for a company that used to be the prime on space suits until we lost the contract. Now we are a sub
.But, we make the on board toilet, oxygen generator, and other systems I'm forgetting. Always been a space (launch) nut...

My mom saw the main engine flare from her driveway 70 miles south of the launch pad.
Such a cool mission! |

What better symbolic tribute to spring driving season than lighting off a gigantic mountain of fuel to send people on a cruise. I'm about to do my own version of this now that I have the car back on the road, albeit with a few less g-forces (and none of that science stuff that they have to justify their trip).

This picture from an Artemis-II window was shot with a long-duration camera shutter speed at night, with the light being provided by the sun reflecting off of the moon from behind the camera. Note the green aurora at the one o'clock position on the disc:
