what's the difference between resonated and Non-resonated?
I am confuse with them
anybody can give me adefineation?

a resonator is sort of like a mini-muffler and its between the cat converter and the muffler, it sort of a silencer to make the exhaust note less loud

Non resonated just means either the exhaust has no resonators or that they removed the resonators. Just remove resonators and weld in straight pipes.

Does it make a big difference sound wise or power wise? If were talking about sound, it really depends on the car. Some people see a huge improvement on the tone of their car. But this doesn't seem to be the case with the e9x. Search for soundclips, i know theirs a few floating around somewhere with stock exhaust resonator removed. IMO most people wont even be able to tell a difference. Power wise, you wont be seeing gains from it, although your butt dyno might make you think their is. Its pretty much for sound (or lack of)

Question. So if I'm going with a full custom exhaust system, I shouldn't even add the resonator, right? It would make sense not to especially if it has no gains other than sound. I'm not sure how much weight I'll save but I would hope I can at least shed a few pounds.

I forgot to ask...I know many aftermarket companies are still designing exhaust systems, but are there any aftermarket exhaust brand names you can recommend that I should look out for? Thanks.

The resonator on the 335 e90 is non-baffled and acts as an x-pipe. I installed a cat back system that eliminated the second cats, resonator, and had flow-thru mufflers. I found the exhaust note on this car is naturally low, and it can create a situation where the low frequencies transmit to the cabin and get amplified at certain RPM levels.
I’m not sure what part the resonators play in reducing/eliminating frequencies or muffling sound. I do believe that type (baffled or straight thru), length, and diameter can be used to eliminate specific frequencies. I think the mufflers and cats play a larger role in quieting sound then the resonators. Even though a lot of people here are doing it, I’d be careful about removing a resonator to increase exhaust sound. You may get a little more sound and a lot more vibrations, plus, they don’t restrict the flow nearly as much as the stock mufflers, cats, and poorly bent piping. |
