Brake job cost

So forgive me if this has been asked already but I am curious as to what it costs to complete a brake job for an e90/92 m3 both at the dealer and just having it done through a performance shop or doing it yourself? This would be for just the oem brakes that come stock on the m3

DIY... dealer quoted me 2k+...

front and rear brakes pads cost... 100-120... per set...

rotors are 450+ per set... depending on the thickness on your rotors you might not have to replace this on your 1st set... depends.

its a very easy job.. just make sure you have all the tools.

while your at it... flush the brake fluid..

well, obviously doing it yourself is just cost of materials: pads, rotors, fluids, fluid pump, some tools, jack...there's a DIY on pad replacement on this site. http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246116
There's also a DIY on fluid flush.

The floating calipers are much simplier than the fixed calipers, if you don't mind getting your hands dirty.

I can't find a DIY on the rotor part, likely it's just a simply unbolt/bolt affair.


At a shop, it's basically, a 2-3 hour job? So they'll quote you at their hourly rate X 2-3 hours and you have your answer, plus the cost of materials. If I were you I'd buy the parts from Tischer and bring it into a BWM indie shop. You can shop for the cheapest price on parts, and the indie shop is alot cheaper than dealer.

If you're a prospective M3 buyer, a lot of people were able to get a pad change for free within their free maintenance peroid.

DIY = always cheaper.

Ya sounds like I could def get it done myself and completed for around 1k, I was expecting to hear some horror stories of it being 3-5k if done at the dealer. I know the brake job of the c63 I have heard is at least a couple g's so I was expecting the m3 to be similar.

While pads aren't too bad, the cheapest price I've seen for front rotors on an E9X M3 is well over $600 a pair. Dealers are charging over $700 a pair. Has anyone found stock rotors cheaper? I'd love to find them for $450, but I haven't seen them anywhere close.

I just bought my M, just out of curiosity, how long do a set of pads last?

Depends on your driving style, type of driving, etc. I am at roughly 44k miles on my 08 with the original brakes. Rears are getting close but fronts have a ways to go.

Do you simply need new brake pads? Front only or front and rear?
Or do you also need new rotors? Front only or front and rear? Aftermarket or stock?
BMW brake fluid or normal aftermarket or fancy high temp aftermarket?
Keeping the stock rubber hoses or changing to braided steel hoses?
Any calipers need rebuilding due to leaking or stuck piston or torn boot?

Last time the dealer quoted me was 800 for the rotors and 180 for the pads thats only the front. Keep in mind that Labor is not included..

so i decided to do D I Myself.

bought a new/used rotor here for $300
bought a brand new pads here for 70

and DIY cost FREE took me 1 and half hour to do it and thats me being lazy usually takes less than an hour for the front...


oh my rear cost me $250 bought a new rotor here as well for 200 and new pads for 50...

Maybe just call a dealership and an indy shop and ask what they will charge you. just sayin...

There's nothing unique about the brakes on this car -- if you've ever done a set, you should be able to do these in an hour or two.

plus one, have done my x5, e90, e46 and even my wifes civic. all the same deal basically.

Bloody dealer quoted my wife $550 to install just SS lines on her 335xi while they were flushing her system under the free maintenance package!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And they said to her that was a deal!! MoFo's!!

yeah i think dealer charged me hour of labor on my e90.

If they had offered to do it for 1 hour of labor, I'd have said go right ahead. But, I guess there's still that "female owner, let's screw her over" mentality....

Oh well, beer and pizza will get it done with my friends.

yeah at that point i really didnt want to do it but since have done bbk install on my e46 and new lines and its not that hard at all. just need small rubber nipple to put over the fitting when you pull the stocker off so doesnt leak and gives you time to get things in correctly without rushing.

The short rear braided lines are a real pain in the rear to install. Some people just leave them alone. They can be done, but they alone take as much time as all the rest of the lines put together.

Dealer labor is among the highest. If I had to pay someone to work on my car, the dealer would be my last choice.
