Software/Firmware Versions (2.40.1 vs. 231E vs whatever)

Realize I may get some comments :-) but thought I would risk it anyway...

Does anyone know how to check what the software/firmware versions are? I have a DCT M3 and want to know if I have the latest version which I hear improves the DCT (or maybe this is no longer the "latest" version)...

At the same time I've heard horror stories of other things going wrong with these updates, but first I just wanted to know how to check?

Ask the dealer? Any other suggestions?

Also - (and this was supposed be my question to begin with) - what are the differences between the various software types (2.40.1, 231E, etc) - do they refer to different modules?
