I had a very similar situation happen to me. Took it to the dealer the first time it occurred, and it had apparently thrown a fault for the O2 manifold sensors. They replaced all the sensors, and I didn't have any more transmission stalling issues.
Then, the problem reappeared a year later. They scanned the codes and inspected the sensors, and nothing was wrong. Now I'm just playing a waiting game to see if it happens again - if so, I will take my car to the dealer asap.
PS - I am assuming you have a DCT.

There are several threads on this, and I experience this issue too, so would be interested to know what your dealer tells you as I've never read a definitive conclusion.
It seems to manifest itself as rev fluctuations while idling, then stalls out to neutral, when stopped after gassing up. For me, more prevalent the lower the fuel-level is prior to fill-up.
Was going to have the dealer look at it when last serviced, but they wanted a week to diagnose it and I didn't feel like having someone at the dealer engage in driving shenanigans to run the fuel down. Will have to time my next service with a low tank...which on the m3 means days ending in the letter "y".

Fuel tank breather valve. It will not throw codes... Part is not expensive but apparently a pain to get to so some labor involved if DIY.

This is one on the best DIYs which covers plenum removal. The only hiccup I ran into was removing the back connection to the valve. Otherwise it is right under the plenum. The part is under $100.
