Secondary air system flow was only shown at first time misfire showed up. It hasn't shown up in my codes.

I am still getting Air mass, Throttle actuator test, and Oxygen sensor (instead of oxygen, it starts showing as lambda sensor).

I've also see other suggest to replace both plugs and coils at the same time.

I looked up a few ICV related posts. It seems that it is logical step to look into ICV related components. There are two pressure sensor related to ICV and each bank. I am going to swap them and see if it makes difference first.

Good point. I have been using trickle charger on and off on my M3 to keep the battery in charge. I didn't measure the voltage directly but I would assume the voltage is high enough. The battery is less than 2 years old BMW brand. The battery was registered.
So what were the measurements? Also, was the battery properly registered?

Have you made any tune related changes recently? I'm thinking tune related or faulty TA.

The description for 2B57 is not correct for S65 DME.

Interesting to know. Well, the car had Alpine stage 1 from previous owner for 3-4 months in 2020. Since I bought the car in Jan 2021, I flashed the ECU back to stock using the file from previous owner. So the car hadn't have tune for 1 year.

How do you know this code is not related to S65? Is there a way to look it up?

The link provided is the source of the correct description for MSS60. It's a more accurate description as the same code on other models could be something else.

You would get that description in ISTA or INPA I believe.
I'm having a similar issue on my 2011. Did it end up being your ICV?
I had a similar issue and was resolved by replacing both exhaust seal rings. Part number...11627830668

Haven't been able to work on my car. I will report back to you on this later. Hopefully in one or two weeks.

That was the first thing i replaced, but it doesn't help in my case.

Dear M3post, My M3 is having band 2 misfire issue. It happened suddenly one day at a traffic stop. The idling sounds rough and fluctuate a bit. After driving for a few more miles, the engine power reduce msg showed up on the screen. I was able to drive it back home. The car seems to be still drivable. (I don't drive it just in case). I have a basic scan tool. Here are a few codes:
2B41 Misfire with cutout several cylinders (spark plugs replaced 5K ago, ignition coils are original)
2B57 Air-mass sensor plausibility
2796 Throttle actuator test, lower stop (TAs have been replaced 5K miles ago)
27B1 Secondary air system flow rate bank2
2729 Oxygen sensor coast mode diagnosis before cat bank 2 (Both pre cat oxygen sensors were replaced (bosch version) about 3K miles ago)
2B39 Misfire with cutoff cyl. 5 6 7 8
2B4E Misfire impairing exhaust emission at several cylinders (I replaced the exhaust X pipe O ring gasket based on misfire forum search)
Running data:
Fuel injection timing cylinder 1-4: 3ms (at idle) or higher (when apply gas)
Fuel injection timing cylinder 5-8: 0ms (at idle) stays at 0 (when apply gas)
Very similar sudden misfiring issue lead to limp mode.
Bottom line - Primary cat clogged. Replaced OE mid-pipe with catless Bomiz x-pipe. Problem solved

Below is a list of repairs & PMs completed only to have major misfires [diagnostic]. Cruel failure after a good bit of time & money.

Thanks for the info. So far, I have exhausted all my speculated repairs and tests. Since my last post, I have replaced MAP sensor (Part:13627838385) and it doesn't help. The misfires still happen and usually show at bank 2. Before replacing the MAP sensor, at one point, it shows only cylinder 8 misfire. Now, after MAP sensor, it shifts to cylinder 5. I don't believe it is cylinder # dependent. It has to be bank 2 related.

So how did you conclude that it was due to clogged primary cat? How could that happen to a normal running M3? Can you give us more info on your diagnosis steps? Thanks

I replaced MAP sensor and it doesn't help. It doesn't seem to be ICV related. The idle speed is more or less stable. The engine holds its speed about 3-5 secs after start and will go into Limp mode after that (along with bank 2 misfire). During he first 3-5 secs, the engine seems to run normal without misfire. (ignition timings seem to be even among all 8 cylinders )
If you have an OBD2 dongle, use Torque app (paid) and log air-fuel ratio in real time. See if there are spikes in afr just before the misfires start. It might be some sort of air leak pre-O2 sensor in the bank 2 exhaust.

Hi Redd, The problem is I have replaced Bank 2 pre cat o2 sensor just to debug this misfire. It doesn't seem to help. Could there be other exhaust leak?
Many places where exhaust can leak including the ring gasket, at the headers, a hole in the pipe (though that usually creates a noise as well).

I guess what needs to be determined is whether the misfire is air related or spark related. Whole bank misfires are usually air related.
M3 misfire issue finally solved. I took my M3 to Bavarian Motorsport (NorCal) to diagnose misfire issue. I have tried everything I can but I couldn't fix it. I tried swapping ignition coils, spark plugs, checking compression, changing O2 sensor, etc. None of them worked.

So I took my car to them on Friday. Yesterday, they told me that the misfire was due to engine oil overfill. Before misfire happened to my car, the oil level sensor told me that the oil is at min mark, so I added a quart oil in. Later, it told me that it is still half full, so I added some more. What i didn't realize is that oil level sensor wasn't working correctly. It gave me wrong information. During misfire debug/repair, it never occurred to me that it could be the engine oil level. I have considered all the possibilities except oil level. It seems to be very simple fix but it took me a while and finally I had to rely on professional help to figure this out

So why does oil over fill cause misfire? It seems that crank loading could be altered. Or it could some extra oil getting into exhaust and trigger O2 sensor. Not sure exactly what is going but it does cause misfire and mainly on bank2.

I’m curious why do you ask about the battery ? I have similar code and battery was not properly registered prior - what’s the relation ?
