I got a blowout about 120 miles from home about a month ago, and the M mobility kit is :barf: Luckily a friend from my local BMW CCA chapter was going to be driving home on the same road I was stranded on. Because he is wiser than I am, he bought a full spare and lent it to me. Now I'm looking for a spare for when I'm travelling.

I happen to have an 18x9.5 et35 SSR wheel that is slightly bent but balances from my e46 track car. Could I put a 255/40R18 or 265/40R18 tire on it and use it as a spare? Do I need a spacer?
Yes. You should have a 12 mm spacer to use that wheel. Buy a 265/40-18 tire because you can use it front or rear. Any other size would not be good for the differential when used in the rear. This assumes you have stock size tires.
Thanks RJ. Always there for the rescue.
A full size spare isn't a bad option (and it's certainly better than no spare), but I'd recommend just biting the bullet and putting together a compact spare--that way you can carry with you all the time. You never know when you'll need it.

See info on what you need here:

Depending on what tire you are thinking about buying for your existing wheel, the compact spare/wheel probably won't be much (if any) more.
