M4 vs 92 m3

Hey,
I’ve owned a modified e92 m3 for 18 months and lately have been wanting to get an m4 or m2 for a while now.
Yesterday I test drove a 2016 m4 and I was very underwhelmed.

I’ve never understood why people who’s make the switch from e92 to m4 would ever come back but I kind of see it now.

My m3 has:
Kw has
Brembo 4 pots
Carbon plenum
M5 shifter
Decat
Modstock remap

The m4 I drove was completely standard. It had heads display, carbon dash, Harmon Larson and Silverstone interior.
I loved the inside so much but I was very underwhelmed by the driving experience, I didn’t think it felt that much quicker than the m3 (well as much as I was expecting)
I thought the car was very quiet and I really missing the engine of the e92

Long story short I’ve been offered to swap my 90k miles, slightly modded m3 for a 64k miles m4 CAT s m4 (Covid) which has bm3, VRSF intakes, VRSF mid and down pipes and stage 2.

Everything tells me to swap but I don’t know if it’s the right decision. It’s cheaper to run, tax and insure. It’s done less miles and it’s much newer but I got the standard one yesterday, wanting to keep mine.
Just wondering what anyone else thinks or if the fact the car in question is modded rather than the standard one I drive will make the difference.

I think most enthusiasts will prefer the E9x overall, but IMO the turbo cars are MUCH quicker.

Almost everyone who bought the M4 sold it shortly and came back to e9X M3 or just bought a different brand.

The M4 will be much quicker and arguably better looking. But that's it. The E9x is a more fun car to drive. And that S65 V8 is a gem!

I did exactly this...

Different strokes for different folks - F8X is a different type of fun. I didn't willingly part with mine but took the opportunity to switch in to an E92 as it was always in the plan to own one.

My 2 cents: F8X doesn't need power, it needs a competent suspension to handle the power it already has; that should be your priority if you switch. My F80 was a go-kart on proper suspension, geo, and tires/brakes. Everyone loved driving it.

Don't forget the Briggs and Stratten sound!

I am among those that went to an F80 and then came back to the e92. I loved the look of the F80, and could even get past its larger size. but the two big hangups for me were the engine sound (one of the worst inline 6 sounds, sorry to say) and the suspension (I thought that the damping on the suspension was horribly tuned, and it would make the cabin creak anytime you hit a slightly sharp road imperfection). I tried fixing both of those things to no avail.

the e92 ain't perfect, but I just love it and my current one is a keeper.

When I owned my E90 I drove a number of M4s on the road and track, and never fell in love with it. The E90's NA V8 and hydraulic steering were to good to tempt me into the faster M4!

A stage 2 tuned f80 or f82 is going to be a lot faster. That said I hope to keep my e90 forever.

thinking about selling my supercharged e90 m3 and getting a f80 and then a single turbo kit.. feel like I might be making a mistake but want something faster and love how the f80 looks

I think F80 looks great, but not a big fan of the F82/83.

I've owned both at the same time for a while now. I've kept the same E92 over the past few years, and have gone through a few F8x's over that timespan (F87 M2, F80 M3, F83 M4)

All cars were manual. I find both the DCT versions of the E9x and F8x to be a complete snoozefest.

I prefer the driving experience of my E92 now that it's heavily modded, but an F8x is clearly the better car out of the box and a lot more capable. The only thing the F8x needs is coilovers and a flash tune, whereas the E92 needed a lot to wake it up and make it feel the way I wanted it to (solid subframe bushings, monoball control arms, carbon driveshaft, short shifter, good amount of weight reduction, better seats, etc)

The E92 is predictable even when driving at full tilt, you're not really worried about losing control of the car or crashing it. The F8x will bite you, you have to respect it.

Both are great cars, the F8x is objectively better, but the E9x is more emotionally connected.

The F8x is also a better daily driver. It's got newer tech, and manages respectable MPG. Cost of oil is cheaper as well, quicker warmup times, etc.
