yeah, lots to consider....these wouldn't be just a one day trip so you know this will lead into a whole other journey down the rabbit hole with toy haaler, etc...

I'm slowly walking back off the ledge, but I want one of these badly....I already have a Bronco for most of my local trails and other fun off road stuff, but it is nowhere near the same experience of a rig like the Maverick R or Pro R ...they are basically a cross between a dirt bike and a sports car.

I do a lot of off-roading with my son he is 14. We have an enclosed trailer and a dedicated Tacoma truck just for hauling toys.

I suggest you rent some side by sides first and make sure you really like taking them out to ride. If you have your own land and plan to ride there than the value is higher to have a side by side.

If you need to haul the side by side each time take that into account. If this side by side will afford you more time with your family,kids, or even your friends I would say thats a big win. Also why go straight to a top of the line massive side by side from the get go?

If the side by side helps bring your family closer compared to the R8 than I would lean towards that.

Nothing is better than going camping and spending a weekend riding with F&F on offroad vehicles. I got into with my son riding MX and it kept us close during his years as a young teenager. My son always wants to go ride with me which is how we spend time together.

Keep us posted on what you end up doing.

these things are like $1200 a day to rent at Glamis, which is pretty insane and that is not even the top dawg....From what I've heard and seen on YouTube is that as soon as you drive one, you want one...and watching those videos, it is easy to see why.

I live about 140 miles away from Glamis which is probably the best place in the US to rip it up in one of these, so it's not exactly down the street, but it is close enough to do a quick day trip

I'm starting to warm up to buying the less expensive model, but I know myself to well and will immediately want the big dawg so I might as well just start there...yes, they are not cheap, but there is not a vehichle on earth that can do what these things can do for the money....the custom buggies these days are north of $150,000 and still can't do all the things these cars can do.

and yes, the family would be able to enjoy this way more than the R8.

I could literally get a Maverick R Max XRS, the baddest boy on the market, and a lightly used motorhome to tow it with for what I could sell the R8 for and have some awesome adventures with...there are some amazing places to run these things and camp in the south west...from the Sierra's to Sedona.

As for the lower end models you can modify them as well and that can be fun if your into that type of thing and the dealers also sell preowned with titles.

yeah, they advertise the 4 seater x3 RS for $988 a day, but once you look further it is over $1200 a day after tax, insurance , etc...

We are blessed here in the south west with all the wide open public lands and just amazing terrain to chose from with year round weather for this kind of stuff...eventually some day we might move to southern utah where you can get some really cool modern design homes with huge RV garages for all the toys for less than most track homes here in SoCal....we fell in love with the St George area where you have Zion and Sand Hollow within 40 min drive. A side by side would be a must have for out there.


starting to warm up to the idea of a small RV instead of the Raptor to pull it with...much better for camping trips...was amazed what you can get these days for around $30k on the used market once I started digging around.

So can you swing it without selling the R8 or it's more the wife is gonna break your balls? I don't blame her TBH but just asking cos i think you can sell the RV/Dune buggy as a family thing.

Seconded. Go over to ADVrider and read about the consensus (it doesn’t exist! lol) on the definition of an ADV bike. Or a sport tourer for that matter! In any event there are many good bikes to choose from these days.

picked it. up last week after finding a local dealer willing to match the offers I was getting in AZ.

will likely be selling the R8 soon on BaT and hopefully still have enough left over for a clean gen2 Raptor to go with it.

Two of my co-workers have 1st-gen Raptors, one of them is a 600hp factory Supercharged Rousch. My family has owned 11 F-150s all 3.5 V6 "EcoBooms". The EcoBoost V6s are incredible, but the Raptor deserves a V8. I'd highly recommend one if you can get one, over a Gen-2 or Gen-3.

I bet the R8 handles the sand dunes better... give it a try.

yeah, a clean v8 gen 1 is still on the table... I still think the gen2 is the best looking Raptor of the three generations

seriously though, i think the gated v8 R8 is one of the best bang for your buck cars out there right now considering what other cars are going for these days.

Considering how clean and well sorted mine is, I'm hoping it does well....

I'm still trying to delay the inevitable though

yeah, it is fun to mix it up from time to time...just wish I was able to convince the boss lady to keep the R8....I'm still trying


but to be honest, I had more fun in this thing in the first hour that I took it out the other day, than I pretty much ever had in any street car in my entire life.

Do what ya gotta do. Dumping what’s surely going to be a classic exotic that still looks better than 95% of new sports & exotic cars for an off roader is somewhat strange to me. However, if you’re happy then That’s what counts.

The R8 is V8 powered so at least you’re not giving up the majestic V10 in which case I’d be very upset.

Arguably his V8 R8 manual is the one to have. Exotic reliable manual. Major collectors item.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a killer car. But the V10 is an all-world, legendary power plant. Not many cars sound better. Still NA too. Gaudy Power and torque numbers. Just as reliable if not more so. Manual V10 R8s are big bucks though!

Splitting hairs here, the R8 is an all-time great and will only appreciate as proper, clean looking exotics powered by proper gas engines get replaced by, well, go take a look around.
