In the mean time I get 40mpg on my Cooper S
richpuer wroteDamn....I dunno if this can be real UNLESS you were on a lonnngggg stretch of highway. From here to L.A., I can get into the very low 20's if I set the cruise control at 70mph for my 65 mile drive.
richpuer wroteyou shift at 3k?
was too lazy to convert to mpg :P
sensi09 wroteBMW says (and has said since the early eighties) that best mileage is obtained by using max throttle and short-shifting. In other words, gun it and shift at a point that just barely avoids lugging in the next gear. Then gun it again for a second or two before shifting again.Shifting below 3K will not always yield the best mileage. Don't redline, but accelerate with a bit of pace until you hit cruising speed. Perhaps 4k-4.5K shifts in the lower gears.
Your mileage may not improve that much, but it definitely won't get worse. Plus it will be much more enjoyable.
IFX wroteI shift between 3-4,000rpm myself. What's the point of revving higher on the street (..unless I'm intending on going significantly faster)? The car doesn't need to be revved high to gain significant speed for surface street driving.you shift at 3k?
Buy another car.
When i say another car, i mean something with about 4 less cylinders.
cwidjojo wroteSlightly OT, but at 18k it should be overdue for service. It's free, do it!-haven't changed the oil or got it serviced yet

This has worked for me over a number of years. Current example: 2010 Legacy GT, rated at 18/25, averaging 25.19 mpg over 16k miles, all types of driving in all types of weather - a fair bit of it running for red line in this chipped vehicle.
You should understand that "gunning it" when the engine is way out of its power band means leisurely acceleration in spite of the pedal position, meaning you can still be smooth.
abehwang wroteMy experience = 1/2 throttle shifting around 3.5K RPM. I seem to get the best city gas mileage doing this and still have a bit of fun!is this true?
gunning it as in WOT?
or 3/4 Throttle? or 1/2 Throttle?
and short shifting when? 2500?

abehwang wroteI get 14.5 with 90% city driving. When I was shifting earlier, I averaged around 12 mpg.what avg mpg are you getting with 1/2 throttle and shifting at 3.5k?
I'm average 17mpg city/hwy mix with light to mid throttle and shifting at 2-3k
Dodge2Dub wrote14.5MPG??!I get 14.5 with 90% city driving. When I was shifting earlier, I averaged around 12 mpg.
E92_SID wroteI'm always using 6th gear to cruise from 40+mph if I just want to coast. But it seems like you have a new car. Once your miles rack up, your MPG will increase. There is no way you are changing gears below 3k ALL the time if you are getting that type of mpg. When I first got my M I was only getting like 12mpg and that was because I pretty much never went over 4th gear. I have since realized that I need to use 5th and 6th and only down shift when I NEED the power. Now that I have been using my higher gears I am averaging 15mpgs.
In city driving I usually shift from 1st to 2nd and around 4500-5000 rpms and then from 2nd into 4th around 4k. Then just cruise until the next light.
cwidjojo wroteThe only time I've gotten less than 10mpg (based on car's computer) was at the BMW driving course (driving one of their M3/M5/M6), where I was flooring it as much as possible, even while idling, hehe. When I looked at the computer of the M3, it said 7mpg!Lol. Thts exactly why I'm so confused. Ppl seem to be more aggressive with their cars and yet they still get 12+ mpg's
abehwang wroteI have 30K miles. The issue is that I am always on the street (I live close to work) and almost never see 40+. I'm quite proud of my 14.5mpg. I was getting less than that on my S4 with the same commute and a slush box. On the highway, I see 24 mpg and usually average around 19.5mpg when I am able to mix hwy/street. Normally, however, it's street only.14.5MPG??!
I guess it depends how many miles you have on your car (if it's broken in or not)
I'm at 20k miles and I WOT redline here and there once in a while at a straight away and still average 17-18mpg with my driving style...

When I went on a road trip I was averaging 22mpg
