guys, i have an issue. i'm not that big of a spirited driver (sometimes, i hit it, but most times i change gears at around 2.5-3k), but i'm still clocking 9.9 mpg. i drive 95% city and 5% freeway. even if my commute is mainly city (boston), i still think that 9.9 mpg is ridiculous given the way i drive. i have a friend who owns an e90 m3, and he drives on M mode all the time, but still gets 14 mpg.

the way i drive:

-power button off
-change gears below 3k, because i just simply can't bear the horrible roads in the city.

the car:

-bought it used with 18k miles
-no performance mods
-haven't changed the oil or got it serviced yet

what do you guys think? is it my way or driving or the car itself that's somehow drinking more than it should?

the rods suck around here I'm from boston too! I'm averaging 12. something now with 3000 miles but before 1200 service it was 14. 2..every time I'm out driving I'm going left and right avoiding potholes, lucky i haunt got pulled over yet!! lol. i drive same way settings in city but get on it in the south shore more often but same there to with the roads ,,,,WTF

Is the mpg reader in the dash for the life of the car, or can you reset it just like you can with the trip computer in the iDrive?

Just wondering, have you guys reset your mpg reader? or do you guys do it the old fashion way, miles driven divided by the fuel added?
Also, if you're driving short distances and havent let the car warm up that could be the issue. The weather is getting colder :P
Mine is dropping from 17-19 in the summer down to 14-15 in the winter with my same driving routes

Push in on the end of the stalk for a couple seconds when the mpg readout is diplayed.

I get better gas mileage when I let the RPM's sit around 3k than when I shift below 3k. Try it out and watch your range when it gets low.

When I'm on the highway, I def see my range go up (when I'm low on gas)when it's low cruising at 3k RPM in say 6th gear. Rather than if I was to shift up to 7 and cruise at lower RPM.

4th gear would set me around 2-2.5k RPM
so you're saying this would be better? than highest gear (6th gear @1.5k RPM)?
