Lots of m3 owners opting for zcp wheels. I did not like the fact that they were not forged aluminum and heavier than the 220M wheels. Enjoy the pics, I think the car turned out great.

Nice i have to same combo. No blacked out front reflectors? Op how do you handle the roads in Manhattan on 19's?
This is my plan. I'm going to have the 220s refinished to the OE look, but, with much darker low lights than factory for more "pop".

That will be the ultimate contrast/compliment to my jet black car.

Edit: I do like black ZCPs but the standard silver color is quite drab. But I'm not a fan of silver wheels in general. I much prefer gloss black, or, the machined/polished-face w/low lights look like the OEM 19s for this car and the E46 M3. Some of the best looking wheels ever made.

had the reflectors done but for some reason did not like the look. yes with all the construction and bumps 19"s arent the most comfortable ride but manageable
Have a gloss black powdercoated set myself for the winter. They're beautiful wheels.

Yes, forged and very slightly lighter (1-2 lbs), but have higher rotational inertia due to different weight distribution. The 220's are also narrower and not as stiff as the ZCP's.

How exactly does he know how the weight is distributed? And if true, how much does this actually affect inertia, exactly? Can we run the same formula with repeatable results? (Rhetorical questions as I highly doubt any of this can be answered). Plus, since the ZCPs are wider, all of that width is in the barrel, furthest from the hub....which contradicts the lower inertia claim (not saying they can't be lower, just that the width would complicate this).

You can tell weight distribution just by looking at the two wheels. The 359's have more mass concentrated towards the hub - the spokes are thicker near the hub while the 220M has the opposite. How much this affects inertia is debatable, but it certainly can be measured or approximated, and with repeatable results.

In the broadest sense, rotational inertia is just a straightforward formula defined as mass x radius^2 (I = MR^2). For the same given radius (9.5" here), if you have more wheel mass distributed near the end of the radius (further from center), the rotational inertia will be higher. To calculate the inertia of a wheel, you would add up the masses and distances from the center and run them through a formula (obviously a bit more complicated for amore complicated wheel shape), but there are also ways to actually measure this - you can rotate the wheel under baseline conditions and measure angular acceleration under a known torque, taking friction etc. into account, and then compare the two.

So, just because they are lighter, again it depends on where the weight reduction is made. If it's made near the rim, then yes, it's better. If it's made near the hub, then it's debatable and depends on moment of inertia.

And just saying "forged" is better does not make it true. So much depends on the construction of the forged wheel and the construction of the cast wheel.

All that being said, I would argue the difference in construction and weight between the two are likely undetectable by most drivers on the street, but for pure track performance, width makes the MOST difference because it allows you to fit more tire on the wheel and thus gain better grip.
