Trade In for Tesla Model S 75D?

Am I making an bad impulse decision or is this a rational one?

As you all probably know by now, Telsa is discontinuing the 75D after this Sunday.

I have a friend that works for Tesla and he valued my 2013 E92 6-speed with 19,500 miles at $32,300.

After Sunday, the starting price of a Model S will be $95k.

M3 is currently a weekend car as you can see by the mileage. Model S would be my daily since my 14 year old son will be driving my current daily in about 2 years.

A 100 question survey pops into my mind.

How many miles do you drive daily?

$95,000??? Shheeeet man.

The depreciation curve on Tesla’s isn’t a whole lot better than BMW’s. They keep improving and the old cars keep dropping in price. No rush

Say both cars are in perfect working order, but have a salvage value of $0. Which car would I rather have? M3 for me, which answers my own question.

When I saw the Tesla announcement this morning, I thought I had to get a 75D before they discontinue it. But that's not the same situation as the M3 in 2013. The M3 was a must have at that time knowing they were the last V8's.

That's a low trade for a final year model. Jeesh

It's more of a preference for me to be the original owner.

Sounds like your friend wants to get your M3 for cheap...

I can't get onboard the Tesla bandwagon just yet. Their electric drivetrain tech is great, but you can get a Jaguar I-PACE loaded for that and it will be so much nicer.

Also consider you're buying a Model S in 2019, a platform that was introduced in 2012!

With the 75D priced at around $76,000, have you considered the Model 3 Performance – which is admittedly smaller than the Model S – but has a 50-mile better range and hits 60 mph about a second faster, all for $14,000 less?

Tesla 75D no thanks! As mentioned you should be considering the 3 performance if looking at moving from M3 to Tesla. Also, your car may be worth $40k or more as private sale depending on options and condition.

That seems low for a final year M3 with low miles.

If you can swing it... keep M3 for weekends and get a midrange Tesla model 3.

If not then sell the M3 privately and order a P3D (performance model 3)...

I've got a V8M3 and a long range Model 3... I've been very tempted many times to sell the V8M3 and get a P3D. But that V8 really makes my day... too bad I can't enjoy it as much with California's stupid loud exhaust law...

That’s a terrible price to unload a low mile, 6 speed, mint 2013 car. Also why? I like the looks of the Model S but seems like a massive downgrade in driving experience and with the Model 3 out depreciation will be very, very steep.

I traded in my 08 me with 74k miles for 18k And got the model 3 Performance. Could I have gotten more for it? Maybe.. but I live in MD and trading in allowed me to drop the purchase price below 60k which gave me a 3k tax credit from MD in addition to 7500 federal. And also less sales tax.. I couldn't have sold for more than 22k since dealers in my area have them for 23k and they are sitting on the lot for over 6 months!

I am not sure why they are dropping the 75D, could be because a 125kWh battery is coming and a price drop on the existing cars? That would suck a ton if you bought a 75d and a few months later 100d costs the same! Again I have no idea! But my me had not had the rod bearings replaced and the throttle actuators were on the fritz again and and and... I was just no longer enjoying my once dream car.

In the coming years we're only going to see more and more electric cars on the road. What about NA V8's?... Other than perceived wear and tear (which doesn't really apply to your car with the very low miles), part of the depreciation equation is supply and demand. The more time goes on, I would think with more and more electric cars on the road and with better electric car technology, a Tesla's value would fall at a higher rate than your M, perhaps your M could at some point even plateau in value. Or maybe even increase?

Just saw your late 2016 feeler post where your trying to sell your car at just over 16k miles for 50K. Now just 2 years later with only another additional 3K miles it has depreciated almost $20k over that time??? I wasn't in the market back in 2016 so I can't say that your 50K price was that far off being it didn't sell, but I was looking all early and mid 2018 and I can say your car even though it's a stripper is worth MUCH more than $32k. Like others have mentioned I would put your car at a minimum of $40K. I'm sure right now as you read this you probably have at least a few PM's from members already trying to offer you more than the $32,300k you were offered by your friend to buy your car.("Friend"? Let's call him a flipper cause that's really what he's gonna do at $32,300) Sheet, if I was looking to buy and saw this thread my $35k cash offer would be sitting in your inbox right now!

I expect it has more to do with better separating the Model S from the Model 3. I’d assume the high end Model 3 and a higher-end Model S have better profit margins than a low-end Model S too.

this guy wants to give $32K for an m3 with 19.5k miles? make sure you look at other m3s for sale with that low of miles on them, this tesla guy doesn't sound like a "friend"
