5W-50 Recommended by TroyJeup

nobody asked, but I'm running Ravenol RRS 5W50 without issues.

Strangely, they also produce a 10W50 RSE which appears to match all of the specs of their 5W50 apart from a higher HTHS closest to OEM 10W60, but both though the cold and hot viscosity is lower than 10W60s and even redline 5w50. I will probably try this one next oil change.

There are not 400 S85 strokers in the USA. Those numbers provided by his followers are pure bogus

Meanwhile, I've done three thousand rod bearings jobs. I started a couple years ago and BE has only made one thousand rod bearings since they started, but I've done 3000. Maybe it was 4000, it's so hard to keep count

Anyone who has actually had a stroker built knows this is pure bullscrap. Pistons from Mahle Motorsport? That will be 12 weeks please. A balanced stroker crank? Give it another 12. Honing and boring the block? Can only be done after you have the pistons. Etc etc etc

Buy the parts ahead of time? LOL. The working capital needs would be epic

I only run Redline 5w50 on S65 and S85. Its brilliant compared to stock and I cannot understand even in high temp climates where you are not tracking it - why anything but maybe 0w50 would be better?

I think Redline 5w50 should be fine. Redline tends to be a thicker oil than the rating. The Redline 10w60 is way too thick. I ran it once and it was like a gel at room temperature. I drained it after a few thousand miles and went back to OEM 10w60.

The only 0W50 im aware of is made by ENEOS, and i dont think anyone would be better off with this over Redline or Amsoil. Its noack is double that of other 5w50s.

Mobil 1 has a 0w50 racing oil but it's got insane ZDDP and will destroy your cats, among other things.

What do you want to know? It's a niche product (aimed at some Ford Performance vehicles that require 5w50) and isn't what BMW specifies.

If it's comparable to the Redline stuff other members here use on their cars. In which case I'd try it out.

Very different products. Red Line is a boutique oil targeted at the aftermarket and is heavy on the POE for basestock. Castrol is targeted at the broader market and is [likely] group III + IV.

I would not consider those two oils "comparable" except in their viscosity grade.

I put 1L of Castrol 5W50 a few months ago after I burned 1L of 10W60LM. Surprisingly I didn't have to add a litre again after 4k KMs, when I was using LM I had to add once every 1.5k-2k so I basically had a mix of 8L of 10W60LM and 1L of Castrol 5W50.

Though it could be purely coincidence that I didn't burn any oil again.

Try 7:2 mix of 10w60 and 0w40 next time. Mine burned very little oil after 3 track days, runs like a champ.

Currently using Castrol 10w60 only because I am a bit concerned about oxidation of ester oils for I don't drive that often nowadays.

When I had my e90 m3 I also ran Redline 5w50. While I am not a scientist, It warmed up much quicker for me in the winter months and never ran too hot in the summer.

I quite like Amsoil 5w50. On my second fill now and plan to keep running it. Here is my last UOA on Amsoil. Certainly seems to get up to temp quickly and keeps engine noise at highway speeds minimal. Oh yeah and probably the best part is even over this longer interval I burned less than half quart!

There is another thread discussing Troy Jeup’s recommendation for a hotter thermostat.

I’ve been using Mobil 5w50 FS and would recommend.

The pictures in the original post clearly demonstrate that dipstick wear is significantly reduced by running RedLine oil. I'm really happy when I can get more than 100K miles out of my dipsticks before changing them out.

Slight highjacking for an oil recommendation..

I was set on LM 10w-60 until recently. From the Blackstone thread it looks like most are running TWS 10w-60, but now this RL 5w-50 seems legit? I'm not too oil savvy, but shouldn't I be looking for LL-01? I need an adult.

Background info, I just bought an '08 M3 with 54k miles. Rod bearings supposedly done. No prior analysis, so I'm going to start a baseline with this. Thanks in advance.
