I second his inquiry? Going to a racing oil for spirited drives?

Edit: keep the “whys/shouldn’t do that” to yourself please, plenty of other oil related threads for that.

People that switched to a lighter oil, what did you switch to, why and how’s your experience been? Are you burning more oil, running hotter, experiencing more chatter, etc

Thinking about switching to motul 300v 5w-40 (best in the biz), from bmw 10w-60, on recently replaced VAC bearings. Won’t see any track use, just the occasional spirited mountain drive.
I asked why, because I’m genuinely curious of your thoughts on switching to 5w-40

I have an unlimited supply of 300v and love ester based oils.
Damn... you're lucky. Can I apply for a track car scholarship?
You can try the Motul 8100 10W60 if you have a unlimited supply available of Motul.

I tried it for a couple changes since it was the same weight I use on my KTM Duke and other members have used here but I switched back to Castrol. It ran great but there was a bit more valve/lifter noise than when running the Castrol 10W60

Not saying you can't or shouldn't but going to a lighter oil for track is not really a good idea. Motul makes a 15/50 which is probably a better bet track use than a 5/40. You said Motul is best in the Biz. Just a suggestion, you really should be asking them. Contact Motul and they will tell give you good info.
You will see 120C at a track regardless of which oil grade you use because that is the operating temperature around which the engine was designed. 0w40 or 5w40 is fine for short runs, stick with 10w60 for any prolonged sessions. There is a reason why GT3/GT4 cars ran Castrol 10w60 for decades.
There is a thread about 0w40 in n the maintenance section.

And remember, there are plenty of ultra high performance engines that run 0w40 as the factory fill for track use.

Cheers,
