CSL brakes
CSL wheels
Different engine tune (?IIRC)


Other things I'm not sure about without looking it up:

CSL style trunk lid with integrated spoiler.



And there are probably other things I've missed.
Actually, the Comp.Pkg had:
  • CSL wheels/brakes (..like you've mentioned)
  • M-track mode (..minimized DSC, similar to what is offered in the E90/92...and no cruise control)
  • CSL steering rack
  • Alcantara steering wheel (..as you've mentioned)
  • Interlagos blue exclusive color

...no engine revisions, etc.

I'd actually look forward to a performance 1-series more than a CSL. My main reason for adopting such a perspective is those of us in the U.S. wouldn't likely receive the CSL anyways, so I'm not emotionally invested in its production.

Designing a lightweight verison of a car, especially an already-engineered car is anything but easy. If it were easy, nearly every car on the market would not be gaining weight with each new generation, they would be losing weight instead.
Well, with $$$ its not so hard to lose some 50kg. For instance, HRE wheels plus BBK will reduce weight by about 18kg to 20kg. CF boot lid and doors will lose you at least that amount. Hood may lose you a bit since its already aluminum. Then is starts getting difficult. But it can be done.

Wow, great list and nicely reaserched. Agreed, first 100 lbs $15K depending on what you replace and with what. In my case, BBK $7.4 and 20" HRE 897R a bit over $6k if I recall, plus Remus exhaust $1.7K, Gruppe-M CF intake $2.8K, boot lid $1.4K, lighter and lower springs $0.8K plus some other goodies for total weight savings of say, well maybe 85 lbs.

For sure, it is tough and expensive to continue to reduce weight no doubt. But, I do have better braking, lower center of gravity and better grip, plus lighter weight and a tad more power from the ECU, exhaust and intake.

I take it you can't back up your claim. Spend some time and think about what has to be changed/achieved to build a CSL which meets people's expectations. You'll see how extensive and expensive such a car would be then. ;)

What you have seem to forgotten is that the E92 M3 only arrived in September 2007. We are not even a Year past. Even less so for North America and other markets.
Sure in the space of the year we have had the launch of the E92,E90 and E93 M3 models.
But these are are only variants suited to each segment respectively.

The M3 CSL will be a continuation of the M3 series but not whilst the car is over a year old on the market which is why you must have patience.
Each M3 series is a high level than what had gone before and that progression features heavily in every new generation also this has to established in the market.

The M3 CSL will not appear over night as will the performance variations of the BMW 1er Coupe (again not even a year old).
But with each generation the M3 progresses several layers above each model. As previously The way to go is Lightweight whilst the focus remains on lightweight construction , BMW want to make these performance cars bearers for "Efficient Dynamics".
"Efficient Dynamics" will feature heavily in future BMW performance cars,
PS output and driving feel is one step , But normally unheard of "efficiency"will be a key word also.

What BMW wanted to do originally has now changed direction in terms of how much lightweight technology will be used and you can expect more than what had been seen before. recent closed door tests included a M3 and a 1er Coupe using different construction techniques and materials and more PS output to their respective production engines to their road car brothers. Whilst original models were thought of along with the M6 . BMW eventually realised there was more to offer with these cars and scrapped the original ideas. Hence why the concept of the CSL series is very much work -in-progress.

It is very much probable that the production car will be considerably more expensive than it's road car brother but what you will get is a highly individual M3 model in every respect from it's road car brother .

Miracles do not happen overnight that is why you have about two years to go.

Sure its pricey to loose weight....but the ALMS M3 racer is 2530lbs with "485" hp.....so clearly there is over 1000lbs to loose (more considering the weight of the cage) from M3's that are going to be track cars....

The ALMS M3 doesn't have to comply with crash and street approval regulations, but the CSL would have to.

Scott's post I've cited above might show an interesting diversion, though: The CSL as it was initially meant to be has been canceled. If I get Scott right, BMW realized that their original plan wouldn't live up to the idea of a true CSL. I'm really eager to see if it comes true that BMW decided to go further regarding development and effort to make a real CSL as Scott suggests. Hard to believe in times of maximized yields...

BMW continues to throw the bogus efficient dynamics slogan out and tried to make a case for 8% increase in efficiency over the E46 which is simply false, no matter how many ways BMW tries to cook the books. The M3 gets poor mileage especially when compared to similarly performing Porsches and the ISF. I am hoping that BMW realized they missed the boat like many manufactures about the escalating oil prices and it's impact on the economy and are revising the 4 litre to implement DFI. If Porsche can do it, BMW can do it better. As great as the 4 litre is, it will struggle to survive in $5+ a gallon U.S. economy. IMO, the M3's biggest weakness by far is it's lack of fuel economy, thanks to the economy.

Imagine a M3 shedding maybe a hundred and fifty pounds with a 10-15% or so percent increase in horsepower and fuel economy. I would gladly give up the Lexus like options and pay whatever extra BMW felt obliged to charge.

I concur that the current form of "efficient dynamics" is merely a marketing term. On the other hand most of these features are unique to BMW. Other manufacturers now start to implement similiar things (for example Mercedes and the start/stop engine system). It will be interesting to see the next step/generation of e.d. measures. After the debut of the GINA light concept next Tuesday we should know more about some of them.

DFI is another key to that game. I'm still hoping that BMW will come up with a spray-guided DFI system for the coming M engines. The V10 is supposed to get sorted out, V8 + Turbo + DFI might be the formula for the next M5.

Finally, I stick by my opinion that the implementation of a spray-guided DFI in the S65 V8 wasn't technically viable yet. On the other hand you might be right, any DFI is better than none. So BMW should have done that...:thumbsup:

I am looking forward to a next generation M3 with a straight six again (or even a 4cylTT) and E36 M3 like dimensions and weight. However, I think BMW, and all manufacturers, are up against a wall with increasing crash safety regulations running concurrent with increasing fuel efficiency needs and regulations. I think decreasing costs of exotic material manufacturing will help a lot but I forsee a transition period rapidly approaching, not unlike the 80's, where the technology needed to rapidly and efficiently produce the materials needed for light, fast, safe, and efficient cars has not caught up with design. What does this mean for us? A period where sports cars are weighed down by cumbersome safety equipment, heavy build materials, and propelled by efficient yet lower output engines. The next generation of M cars, and all BMW's for that matter, will suffer...

What will the future hold? My guess is that composites will snake there way into everything from production body panels to chasis design (not unlike the ridiculously expensive GT2 class cars of today). The sports cars of the future will be small and light, powered by turbo charged diesel 4 cyl engines with moderate output.

However, things like airbags, brakes, DSC systems, and AC systems will have to be designed and built to be significantly smaller and 50-75% lighter than the systems of today...

Do you think the ~5 MPG combined improvement in fuel efficiency over the E9X warrants the extra $30K for the 997S...That's a ridiculous amount of money for 'so called' improvement...

And the S65's efficiency is actually quite impressive for the improvement in power... Lexus' efficiency is impressive due to an 8 speed auto??? What sacrifices were made with the IS F in order to increase efficiency??? The IS F is a perfect example of what a manufacturer produces when they are more concerned with ergonomics and efficiency rather than the dynamics of the vehicle as a whole...

There is a possibility that the M could struggle in a $5/gal economy, but in this segment, sales have more to do with the economy as a whole rather than having a direct correlation to the price of gas...

Believe me, I too would like a practical coupe or sedan that offers 25 MPG, and 997S performance for $55K...but, in the end, that doesn't seem very realistic...

I disagree.

Clearly BMW does its good share of marketing spin and I have been critical of them here as well. I too am a bit disappointed about the quoted efficiency vs. actual mpg and the M3s weight as well but let's look at why efficient dynamics is real.

-I think the engine is 8% more efficient. That is an accomplishment.
-Dynos and performance results show the M3 as a slight over-performer some of this I believe to be from minimizing drivetrain losses
-BER (although very unfortunately not present in NA) is a nice part of ED
-Although not lighter than the previous generation there was much more effort put into weight management on the car than on past cars (roof, fenders, hollow suspension, drive and engine components), more aluminum, heck light weight carpet, etc. Is careful management and offsetting of weight gain ED? I think it is... sort of...

We've had this discussion before and efficiency is important to me, but it really is a bit silly to make green or efficiency criteria near the top of your list for a car like the M3. As well I honestly do not believe that $5/gal gas would significantly affect the success of the M3. I already pay over $4.60 depending on which station I stop at. High gas prices are sort of a regressive "tax" on the poorest folks in our society.

On your last point - sure that would be a truly amazing car. You do realize that it would very likely cost $100k+ right? Engineering is very often about very clever management of conflicting goals. The M3 wins big time here.

Here in the UK we are paying £5.60 per UK gallon and at a present exchange rate of $2 per £1 you can see that it's high time you stop complaining.
