DIY: Spark Plug Change - 2008 E92 M3

Just changed my plugs in 2 hrs. No coil puller needed.

Twist the coils 1/4 turn before you try to pry them off, and then using a very large flat head, get leverage where you can and in a logical place, pry up with the screwdriver, and grab the coil with the other hand and lift up. Be careful but firm they all should pop out easily, in fact I was prepared for a struggle but they all just popped right off.

The harder part was re-attaching the coil clip on the back two cylinders, and before that just finding room to wiggle damn the coils out of the back 2.


The S65 is extremely sensitive to worn plugs, if anyone is on the fence it feels like a small mod when you replace very worn plugs on these cars. It will wake it up significantly. It is noticeablely more responsive now and feels more alive.

I've been searching high and low for the M-Division Coil Puller tool. The only one on Amazon is unavailable. Does ANYONE have a link to where to order one? Hell, even if I need to order it from Germany. I know there are DIY-garage "presidential solutions" methods but I'd rather have the proper tool and not brake S**t.

I really haven’t seen one in a few years or heard from the designer in as long.
If you are ok with just borrowing one, I’ll send you mine as long as you would be so kind as to return it after your job.

That would be very gracious of you and I'll for sure return it. I had to replace my original idler pulley (was making screeching noise) and the other two tensioner pulleys so next is to do my plugs. I was going to attempt to do without but if you are willing to send it to me, I'll hold off till then. Please pm me and I'll reply. Very much appreciated!!

I bought a windshield wiper puller from Amazon as suggested and a couple minutes with a grinder gave me an adequate coil puller. Coupled with a KoKen spark plug socket and I managed to get the job done.

Keep in mind you will have to thin the arms down a little with a file or grinder. I think I took about a millimeter off

How do you go about extracting the driver side back coil? That hung me up for 30 minutes before I somehow got it right. I don't recall exactly what I did. Getting it back in was nearly as bad

I wrapped a shoelace around the top circle, and slowly pulled up.

Oh my problem wasn't loosening it, I had trouble getting it out of there altogether to inspect it.

Even with unclipping the fuel lines I had a hell of a time getting it in and out of the area

It took patience, but it does come out without moving anything out of the way, as far as I remember. Didn't remove the plenum either, it's definitely a tight fit.

It's a tight fit. I usually spin the pack until the connector is at an angle that allows it to clear and then rotate it to the proper position once clear. The rubber at the bottom has a little give to it which also helps for that last 1/4 inch.

Sorry for the hiatus....

just did the spark plug job, started at 6:05p and finished buttoned up at 7:39p so about 90 minute job. didn't have any special puller tools, just used the method on FCP euro's video, flat head and 2 hands. everything came out pretty straightforward with the exception of passenger side back one. that one took a little convincing with a old coax cable i had laying around. I read others talk about using cat 5 cable or wire coat hanger.

once coils were out the plugs were pretty easy to get to. the trick - harbor freight pitsburg 5/8" spark plug socket + 3" 3/8 extension + 3/8" icon wobble + 24" icon extension.

drop the plug + short extension + wobble into the socket and it'll be the perfect length where the wobble is jus barely exposed. then use the 24" extension to connect to the wobble receptor and go at it. didn't have any trouble getting any of the plugs out the perfect combination of the tool made the perfect length to navigate the space. everything just worked out.

putting the coils back was pretty easy tool, only one that was a pain was the passenger side back one, there i had to just a jack pad i had laying around as an extra spacer so i can get my palm on it and push down for it to pop in.

net net. you don't need any specialty tools, this is an easy job... the videos that talk about about all the specialty tools and what not are overkill, this is a very straight forward job, don't over think it.
